.Mac mail

I just bought a macbook recently and saw these .mac proposals that want me to try it out. To join it costs money. Why does it cost so much for just mail? Is it worth the money to have an account on one of these things? What is so good about .Mac? And will it be any use to me if I just check my mail and delete the unnecessary mail? Thanks for any advice.

There is also lots of information and videos of how the whole .mac thing works. I hope this helps.
