iMac CD-ROM not accepting CD-R/DVD-R but Reads Normal CD/DVD

Well my first gen. 24in iMac reads regular store bought CDs and DVDs fine but every time I put in a blank CD or DVD it says it doesnt recognize the CD. Is my CD-Drive done for? or what can I do?
