MMS In Installer

There is an APP to send MMS messages. Looks pretty cool, but I cant get it to work yet. It also says they are working on getting it to receive MMS messages too.

If it doesn't make it so you can receive them what is the point? You can already send them through email. Not much use for this until you can also receive messages.

My question, and the main reason why I don't mind using email to send photos from my phone, does it cost money still?

I don't think so. Your email usage will be covered in your data plan, that is if you are not using a hacked phone. If it is hacked and not on an official iPhone tariff then you may have to pay for data usage.

This is great for me.

If anyone sends an MMS to my phone, I can just view it on the O2 website.

But, I can't send MMS to other people AT ALL, and emailing usually isn't an option as most of my friends aren't tech-savvy enough to use email on their mobiles.

I've been using the O2 MMS web app from the Apple Web App page. No need to log onto the O2 website any more, when you get an "MMS is waiting" text just go to the web app - nice, simple and the pictures are displayed a LOT better than the O2 preview. It'll do until there is a real MMS application...

Voila! They just received an MMS from your iPhone.

And most other phones can email out..... so receiving a pic on your iPhone isn't a big deal either.

If you mean 'does email cost money' it depends on your contract. For example my O2 contract had 1Mb per month (which is nothing). Exceed that and I'd be faced with heavy charges. However I've bought a bolt-on for £7.50 / month which ups it to 250Mb of data. So I can send emails all day long as long as every month my total usage is within that 250Mb of data.

Of course MMS and TXT's are charged individually.

This is great for my friends who have AT&T. But My sister has Nextel, friends have Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile. I don't know who has what service off the top of my head so knowing which email address to use to send a MMS becomes a bit tedious.

Don't get me wrong, I'd rather email everyone anyway, but the fact that MMS is so pervasive in the market and is the method of choice on mobile phones, being able to send and eventually receive these rocks.

Doesn't work in the UK to my knowledge, and I can count the people I know who use email on their (personal - friends with Blackberrys use them exclusively for work) phones on 1 finger... and they have an iPhone. MMS is a bigger deal in the UK than the States.

This is such a backward step. MMS costs 'money' in terms of your SMS allowance, it has nothing to do with data usage. Effectively it works out at something like 3x SMS (in the UK anyway), and if you're over your text allowance then you'll get charged.

For UK iPhone owners, with unlimited data, I cannot see why we're so hung up on not having MMS when an email can do the job for free.

Know exactly what you mean. However, most mobile users do not have email access on their phone but have MMS. Another way of looking at it is how many phones with cameras do not support MMS - at a guess only the iPhone, so it is us that are in the minority.

We should have both. Perhaps because the iPhone is US designed then MMS wasn't seen as important?

You don't need to memorize all their mobile addresses... thats what the iPhone's address book is for. I just enter the users address for receiving MMS messages under their contact info.

Anybody else having luck seeing it? And if so, what is the actual name of the app? MMS, SwirlySpace Software, etc.

Oh joy. This would require me sending a blast message to over 100 recipients to ask them what cell service they use so that I can manually add 100 more entries in my contact list for secondary email addresses. If someone changes providers but keep the phone number, I still would need to update my contacts. Seems like a lot of work to me just to have a feature that most cell phones have. I like keeping my addressbook concise and organized (as much as I am able to!)

Also annoying is when I receive a MMS, I need to write down the username and password and hit the website to view the image.

I'm also not sure I'd want to trust sending my emails via a beta product I haven't heard of or read about yet.

You are correct. Just beacuse Steve Jobs says we should be sending emails, and not MMS, does that mean we should? There are a whole lot more MMS capable phones out there as opposed to email capable phones.

When a "brand new" or even sometimes an update is released and is talked about widely over the net, it takes installer.app's dev team up to 24~48 hours until they update it or add it.

The actual name is "MMS". This is a modmyifone package that has been submitted to the installer repository. For now, its only available if you have added the modmyifone repository as a trusted source.

My thoughts exactly! But until then, web sites such as MacRumors should actually say "Owners of "hacked" iPhones can install it using Installer.app within the next day or two." Saying you can do something now before it actually is possible or before an App is actually available is a bit misleading.

Asking everyone their carrier? Why would you do that? I guess you didn't read the whole post you're complaining about.

So now you have to add two email address for every person? Boy, for such an advanced, easy to use product, that seems pretty idiotic. And what is your solution for sending picture messages to phones that are not email capable?

While technically MMS was a solution to being able to send picture messages instead of email, it sure has taken off like wildfire. Why Apple chose to ignore a function that a huge majority of phones had, is a wonder to me.

Point is MMS is found on $49 throw away phones, but not a $599 phone of the future?

Through their MMS app on their phone. That's because it is NOT being received via Email, only being SENT via Email (which of course, every iPhone has). It should be RECEIVED like any other MMS message. So, I guess he really IS a smart guy after all.

Has anyone gotten this to work? I sent a test message AT&T to AT&T and can't find my recipient to know if it worked. Anyone?
