iPod Touch + JBL On Stage 3 = Noise/interference

Hello,

Recently I got an JBL On Stage III to complement my iPod Touch.
All seemed well, until I heard crackling and clicking noises when the iPod stands in it. When the music is paused or when the volume is low, this is audible and very disctracting. Also, when an animation is going on (like menu transitions), the noise becomes louder.

It's not just regular noise, since it doesn't appear with an (old) iPod nano.
Also, when using batteries, it is not present. (the iPod does not charge then, maybe that's the problem)

Maybe some one with this combination can confirm or deny these problems, or even knows a solution?

Thanks in advance,
Dr. Rengers

Not sure of the cause, but try turning off wi-fi and see what happens. Sometimes the interference can cause the crackling noise.

Thanks for the reply, but I already tried that and it had no effect.
I'm getting the feeling it has to do with charging, because with batteries, there was no interference at all.

I'm having this problem when docking my iPod Touch to my iWake. I turned off wifi, didn't help. It works fine with my video ipod, just not the touch.

No solutions for this, other than paying for another $100 docking station?

Unhappy clicking with nano:(

Yes, my green nano makes a lot of tiny clicking noises in the on stage 3, all the time text or pictures scroll - i will maybe ask my money back (i have 14days bought it on apple store)

Also goes into external speakers, making it useless for soft music or podcasts

Will try with batteries, but the point is to be a stereo... the sound is otherwise brilliant and the audio out could be used for a sub!

Same problem with my iPod Touch, but that's pretty random.

The noise occurs only when the battery is charging.
If I plug the iPod just enough for the sound to connect, no noise.
This usually requires several attempts.

I've noticed that keeping the screen turned on usually helps.

Overall, I think this noise tends to stop after some time (or am I getting used to it... )

Unhappy (not satifying) Solution

G'Day everyone,

Just bought one yesterday and noticed he same problem with an iPod touch.

Seems to be coming from the charging circuitry.

If you lift a bit the right corner of the iPod (to unplug only the right side of the connector) you keep audio but no power comes in. If you plug back very slowly, the charging remains not active (not always working): the top right corner shows a battery with no symbol.

It's a crappy solution, but works. With a bit of training, you'll be able to do it the 1st time.

Hope this helps.

Patrick.

I have just got home with a JBL on stage III in black to use with my iPhone 3G. Have the same issue - noticeable hiss which is not there if I use the 3.5 mm audio lead instead of docking the iPhone. Wish I had read this thread before giving John Lewis £100 for it.

Tried the 'wiggle it a bit' fix above and yes it does seem to have worked
pchouard you are a genius. the best crappy solution I ever used.

Other than the noise it is a nice bit of kit. Will keep it as I am taking it to Turkey with me for a few weeks and see how it goes. John Lewis are pretty cool about returns.

I have just bought an Ipod Touch and a Wharfedale IS73 Ipod Micro System. I am hearing the same pulsing and had deduced it was from the charging circuitry. The "crappy fix" works a charm, but what I want to know, is if this is a fault with my specific Ipod, or ALL of them.. or is it a fault on the part of the device im docking with?

I've tried with another iPod Touch (with the same firmware), it didn't have the problem.

Hi all,
I bought an Onstage III yesterday... and it seems the problem is still there!

I use it with an iphone 3G (last generation and SW up to date) and I get the kind of weird background noise you described (even if the ipod function is of).

Just as one of you, I wish I had read this thread before giving my credit card for that stuff!

The fix of lifting a bit the right corner of the device works fine but I was wondering if, since the problem was raised a few month ago, there was now an "official" fix?

Thanks

The radial is noisefree!!

I gave up on the onstage because of the noise, and just bought the jbl radial - and it works!!!

Same small tweeters and a very good bass, can fill a big room and looks cool, compromize is the electricity cord needed, i choose to live with that.

And it can only synchronize only my ipod nano, might have something to do with the connections, so i'm loathe to send it for repairs, i am used to sync my touch with cable anyway

Models from 2009 still very noisy

I bought the JBL On Stage III last week (May 2009), and it still exhibits the noise. So the manufacturer didn't do anything to repair the issue. I used it with an 3rd gen iPod Nano, an iPhone and an iPod 4G. All had the noise problem, and also without any ipod inserted it blurts out noise. So I returned it.

Don't buy this thing! The noise is crap!
