How do I convert an iTunes file to MP3 or WAV format?

Is this possible? I would like to chop up songs I buy off iTunes and make them into my ringtone for my cell phone (not an iPhone). I have a WAV editor but whenever I try to drag and drop an iTunes song I purchased into the program, it doesn't work. Any tips?
