I have some .rar files that I need extracting but I don't have a clue as to what I can use. back in my PC days I use to use WinRAR but that was then and here I am now with my beloved Mac.

any suggestions?

Yes, The Unarchiver is a simple extracting app that support several compression standards including .rar :apple:

Stuffit Expander is the only one which can handle passworded archives correctly.

How does it handle passworded .rar archives differently than UnRarX? I've never had an issue with it.

The Unarchiver wants to grab control of split files as well as RARed files, although it cannot deal with the former, which is annoying. It is also useless with password protected files.

The Unarchiver is the best for decoding different code pages - the default is to ask you if it detects accents or non-Latin characters, while others mangle the names of the contents of the RAR files. For speed and consistency, I would plump for RAR Expander, which also handles password protected files.

If you are going for the Unarchiver as your all in one decompressor, then you will need RCDefaultApp to fix those MIME types.
