It's True! 20" Imac displays are known to be defective

I am considering buying a 20" Imac but after reading reviews here and elsewhere it seems painfully obvious that the 20" Imac ("aluminum" version) is completely defective. 🙁

I've heard that the 24" Imacs aren't as bad.

By the way I have bought my son a 15" MBP for Christmas/graduation so I am not bashing Apple for fun. 🙂

1. The title of this thread is completely misleading. A correct title would be "I am afraid because of reports of defective 20" iMac displays" or something similar. You should fix that.

2. People who have problems post them. People without problems usually don't. I have four 20" iMacs around where I am right now, and none have any problems with their screens, so I post that for a change.

Agreed. Our 20" iMac needed display calibration right out of the box, and the vertical viewing angle tolerance is not impressive, but it's hardly "defective."

Seeing as how your (I must agree with the previous 2 posters) title has NOTHING to do with what you posted, I'd say you are bashing.

I've seen enough good 20" iMacs (1 is enough for this point) to disprove the title of this thread.

Are some bad, yes, are some good yes, are most bad? that has yet to be seen but one could assume that most are bad due to post count, but as someone put it, people with issues post, people without mostly do not post, and we're grateful for those who do not have issues that post as it sheds some light that NOT ALL are bad.

Ths statement is completely false, and is a generalization. Indeed, some displays are faulty. They are hardly "completely defective". Mine is fine.
 
If any component of it works at all, then it is not "completely defective". That's a pretty low bar, though, but not lower than hasty false generalizations.
 
It's True! Whatever I say is true just because i can post it 😎

My 20" has a perfect display. Not sure what their average failure rate is but if was even 10% there would likely be a recall.
 
I have a few at work and however they are not "stunning" there is nothing wrong with them...
 
another 20" aluimac here with a beautiful perfect screen! I've been using it since the day it came out and I have had absolutely no complaints except for the crappy "mighty" mouse.
 
Yeah, mine works fine too. We haven't had any issues at work either, except for one that had a bad drive. After that was replaced, it works fine now. That's out of about thirty or so, so far.

Neither is mine... wait maybe it is and my eye's are defective.

I also agree you should change the tittle of the thread. "Are 20" iMac screens defective"

calibrate the darn thing (or use the color profile floating around MR) and play with the contrast a bit.

Of course the factory contrast setting will likely make the screen look washed out ... changing this slightly will likely change things dramatically.

But if you still decide that you want to sit outside the best viewing angle for the screen or choose a background that makes the screen look really bad. 🙄

But this is not the point. The point is that some screens have different color quality from top to bottom. No contrast/color calibration can fix that... 🙁

Some maybe, but all of them suffer from the viewing angle issue -- you minimize it the best you can and you get used to it or not.

Sort of like people complaining about the fuzzy text on Macs when coming from PCs.

Some people don't even notice it until they look for it.

If you don't like the screen on the 20" or the 24", you can always buy the Mac Pro.
 
It seems like Apple is using cheap LCDs for all of their products. In the past 2 months i've owned an iPhone (exchanged 5 times), iPod Touch (returned 3 times), iPod classic returned and exchanged for an iPod nano. I went from an iPhone to an iPod nano. It seems that every screen suffered from some type of problem. I thought I might just be being picky, but I guess not. It's amazing that even iMacs are having screen problems.

Seriously, the world won't end by admitting that Apple is supplying cheap screens for the 20" Imac.

If this is Apple's way of forcing people to spend hundreds of dollars more for the 24" Imac then so be it. I will probably end up buying the 24" Imac so I won't get a washed out screen. Oh wait, I don't like glossy screens! 😱

You must have really bad luck. I, and many friends and family members, own several of those products (I own a nano, an iPhone, several Macs). I work on Macs all day at work. Only one of the recent batches has had a bad screen, and I think it was dropped based on how it looked. If this was the norm, Apple wouldn't have the high quality ratings they do in practically every article I've seen, and they wouldn't be anywhere near as popular as they are.

But it's not true. I'm not a fan of the glossy, but it isn't as bad as I thought it would be. No offense, but you don't even own one. 1 poster in a web forum (and a newbie at that, who didn't elaborate at all BTW) where everyone else is saying they're fine, doesn't that tell you something? Do you think we're all just making it up? They aren't perfect, no one is saying they are, but they're nowhere near as bad as you seem to think.

Seriously, I've set up hundreds of Macs this year at work, and maybe a handful have had problems.

Uhm.... yeah. Whatever.

For what it's worth, we have both 20" & 24" iMacs here. The screen on the 24" IS superior, but that's not to say that the 20" is a poor screen - quite the contrary, it's damned good.

Believe what you want, but do bear in mind that satisfied users are far less likely to post a report than those who are having problems.
