Set up: Epson Stylus Color 3000 with Network Interface Card (NIC) in 10.5 Leopard. It prints ok from 10.4 and another computer on 10.4 but the 1.7a driver doesn't work in 10.4 and hasn't been updated since 2003.
When trying to print it buffers data through then goes to Printer Paused. If I watch close I can see
/usr/libexec/cups/backend/ipp failed
Even updating to the 5.1.4 Gutenprint driver <a href="http://downloads.sourceforge.net/gimp-print/gutenprint-5.1.4-UB.dmg?download">gutenprint-5.1.4-UB.dmg</a> still left me with a paused printer
This backdoor process gets it printing, but the queue has to be cleared manually.

Go to the address of the Epson SC 3000 printer in Safari
http://192.168.123.115/
Under the information heading on the left click on IPP
Copy the line next to IPP URL
http://192.168.123.115:631/EPSON_IPP_Printer
Back in Safari, go to http://localhost:631/ which magically opens the back door. [I have NO idea how you're supposed to find THIS on your own!]
Either click on the "Add Printer" button below the Welcome! banner or click the Administration tab and under the Printers heading click on "Add Printer"

Name: SC3000 [no spaces alllowed] This is the queue and how it will be listed under the printer tab in CUPS
Location: Study
Description: Epson (This shows up in Print & Fax as the printer name)
Click Continue, wait 7 seconds

From the Device: popup menu choose Internet Printing Protocol (http) or (ipp)
Click Continue
Paste into Device URl: (write over the "http" already there) the address you copied from above
http://192.168.123.115:631/EPSON_IPP_Printer
Click Continue
From the Make: popup choose Epson
Click Continue
Scroll down the Model: listing (about 2/3) and choose
Epson Stylus Color 3000 - CUPS+Gutenprint v5.1.4 (en)
Click Add Printer

In Preferences:printe & Fax uncheck Share this printer (it's a network printer)

CUPS doesn't remove jobs from the queue. You have to delete them manually before the next job can go through.

A bit late to the party, but I'm now successfully using the Gutenprint 5.2 driver on an Epson SC3000 with an Intel Mac running 10.5.2 with no problems other than a little adjustment needed to strengthen the colours.
