Regularity of Safari crash on iPhone?
I'm a pretty heavy user of Safari on the iPhone but I'd say it crashes 2-3 times a day.
Just goes straight back to the menu screen and although it picks up where I left off when I re-open Safari (well, reloads the page I was on I should say) it's very annoying. Is this above the average? |

when I bring home that stray cat, "Take It Back!"

Don't take it back, your iPhone is fine. Heavy usage will result in more frequent crashes. Most people just don't use it heavily so don't notice. Software updates should bring more stability.

Every once and a while safari will crash all the time,
but I found that the best fix is to first force quite safari, by opening it up then holding down the home button. Then shutdown the phone, and then turn it back on! that fixes it for me, but eventually (like in a few months) it starts to happen again... force quite, and reboots always help though!

Mine hasn't CRASHED yet...
and that's whether I'm using EDGE or WiFi, according to your advice, I must be one of those "anomalies" since I haven't HACKED my iPhone. Sounds like it depends on where you are located, but my experience with Safari, while attending iPhone workshops at Apple Stores and utilizing their WiFi with at least 20 other iPhone users surfing Safari right alongside of me; I've never experienced a crash or heard anyone around me experiencing a crash. So, I'm surprised that SKEEN would make the claim that "heavy usage" would be the cause. My understanding is the crashing is usually experienced right after installing 3rd party apps or installing audio/video content, (are "all" of your iPhones hacked with 1.1.1?) and any customization of the keyboard, can cause Safari to crash multiple times. Are you saying that "all" future updates are going to "bring stability" to HACKED iPhones? So, SKEEN may be right "don't take your iPhone back" since it might be HACKED!

Some people claim it's the type of websites (whatever that entails). You sound like one of the lucky ones. Each phone seems to have its own personal set of anomalies. Probably a memory leak / overwrite whose address depends on when you start it up or do things. |

That is the single most cause of safari crashes is poorly written javascript. Javascript requires processing power to function, and if it is poorly written it can require more power than the iPhone has, or it can just lockup safari all together (digg does that to my desktop version of safari all the time) causing it to crash on the iPhone, or beach ball on the Mac,

Thanks for clarifying...
kdarling & Me1000, Safari crashes on my Mac Pro & MacBook with the installation of Leopard, much more than with Tiger 10.4.10, so the info about Safari crashing on the iPhone "because of heavy usage" doesn't make sense, nor have I seen it with the websites that I've been visiting regularly on a daily basis; such as berkeley.edu, sfsu.edu, BofA, WellsFargo, iLearn, Turnitin.com, MacRumors, AT&T Wireless, Powwows.com, Berkeley's Scholars Workstation, and many of the Library Journal & Multidisciplinary Databases at hours at a time, and I Google everything from my iPhone. I'm certain that everyone on campus is accessing the EDU & Library sites at the same time as me and many times the campus WiFi goes out while I bang-away on my iPhone with my AT&T EDGE. Javascript does make sense, since it sucks up so much power as you stated! Thanks again.

Clearly I don't use the browser enough - or just don't frequent the right sites. I've never had the browser crash on me. Under Tiger and Leopard there is one site that causes Safari to fold on a semi-regular basis IF it is the first site I visit after firing up the browser - though the iPhone has yet to do so.

Crashed a handful of times since I bought it on 9th November. I'm a pretty heavy user too.
You're all on 1.1.2 right? Mine always has been. |

![]() It's genuinely quite annoying but then like I say - heavy user so much greater chance, don't personally believe it's a 'take it back' issue. |

As an aside, I think I'll unlock later today.
I think it depends on where you go on the www. I think some sites fair better than others. I also think a major firmware revision will come in Feb/March. I suspect things will get better with that. |

Mine has only crashed when loading a page with a lot of content.
Im not that bothered though because im sure it will become more stable with more software updates. |

Mine crashes a lot, and its the second UK iPhone I've had. It does it about 80% of the time on Engadget, even once on the Apple iPhone page, and other sites. This is without the iPod playing.
When the iPod is playing, and I'm in Safari, the iPod often stops playing. Safari is very unstable, even on relatively simple sites. Can't wait for a decent update! |

My Safari does crash, maybe more often that Firefiox used to on my desktop, but not often enough to piss me off. I think it may crash most often when I'm pushng a heavilymagnified page around, but is not often enough for me to be sure.

simfree unlocked 1.1.1 and I use safari a lot and experience crashes regulary. Certain types of webpages seem to suffer more crashes than others. And if you try to listen to music while browsing... foggediboutit, it will crash insanely much.
With 6 months an many firmware upgrades I must say that I am disapointed in these issues not having been fixed yet. What really sucks is that buggy software has become such a norm that people simply accept it as the way things work. Even Apple cant boast improoved stability anymore and things are getting worse by the minute it seems. |

Safari started to crash a lot on me and I mean a lot, up to every five minutes. So I cleared the cache, history and cookies, but it didn't help. I usually never turn off my phone completely, but once I turned it off and back on the problem was solved.

I've had a LOCKED, O2 UK iPhone, not jailbreaked, 1.1.2 of course, and as above, my Safari crashes are very regular, in a variety of circumstances; and very annoying! |

I am a fairly heavy user of Safari on the iPhone, and it has only crashed on me once. And that time was wen I had a lot of tabs open, playing a game, and switching to landscape mode, all at the same time. I am guessing it is more site specific, like Safari on the Mac.
