Can any kind souls recommend me any 3rd party program to hide my IP in leopard. Many Many Thanks!!

You can use an online proxy service.. And configure the Proxy settings under your System Preferences/Network/Advanced tab..

Or for occasional use.. just go to http://proxy.org/

Hi Octobot, do these proxies for occasional use really work? will a spy log detect the routing?
Many thanks

TOR - depending upon what you're doing. Then again, the original question is a bit ambiguous - what do you want to hide? Web traffic? Does that include SSL?

Unless you use a proxy...its impossible to hide your IP address. The websites you connect to need to know your IP address so they know where to send the data.

well a proxy will hide your ISPs ip in a web of other ones. but in all honesty your private address dosent need to be hidden. everyone has an address that looks like 192.168.1.xx or a 172.168.1.xx those do nothing they are private addresses. they get translated when leaving your network to your real IP static or dynamic that your ISP has provided you. if you are worried about it for whatever reason you can use a proxy. or you could call your isp IF YOUR ADDRESS IS STATIC meaning it does not change. if its dynamic dont worry about it. as it will change at some point. otherwise use a proxy. I hope some of this makes sense.

Thank you for your reply Matt. I would have to hide my ISPs ip as that's recognizable as belonging to a provider in my country.. Ideally I would have to have a friend abroad but since that's not possible I will try and use a proxy but am not sure if those work. can I just insert an address in one of those blank boxes and surf? what about changing url from one page to the next?

Tor is the closest to decent anonymity that you can get. Yes, you can surf normally, though it will go at the speed of snail. Why do you need it?

Hello - Im new here so il just say 'hi' first! (im also new to Macs!)

Was this thread and was intrigued. I like the idea of being 'invisible' on the web, though have to confess I know nothing about networking or network security (though really want to learn!) - even if it just means I wont get some fraudster on my Mac. Like the idea of disguising my IP address so am I on the right lines on this thread?

I need this same question answered, but I will give you a reason.

I am moving to Taiwan for a year to teach ESL. I want to be able to access sites like hulu.com and use my Netflix Instant Watch player. These things are blocked if you try and view them with a foriegn IP address.

I need something that blocks/changes my IP address for free. So far I have found something called WiTopia. They actually change your IP address so it looks like an American one, but they charge $39.99 a year.

Does anyone know if there is a way to change this on your own, OR a program you can download for Mac?

Ok, just want to clarify a few things. How you hide an IP depends on what you're hiding it from. Do you just want to browse the web anonymously or do you want to help protect yourself from local ARP attacks? If you use a public internet then ARP should be you're major concern. In that case, you would want to hide your local IP. There is no way to prevent ARP attacks, but there are ways to help prevent it. One way is to become "invisible" on your local network. NOTE: This is only for local networks and in no way will hide your ISP IP address. Open up system preferences --> Security, and turn on either of the firewall options. Then click on advanced and enable "Stealth Mode". This will prevent your computer from sending a response when a device is scanning the network. Thus, when a "ARPer" scans the network for hosts, your IP address will not be added to the hosts list and therefor will not be ARP attacked. However, there are ways of getting around this, and there will never be a way to totally prevent ARP attacks.

If you want to hide your ISP IP address, then proxies are the way to go. However, I don't recommend using web based proxies. It is better to do it through the OS. To do this, open up system preferences --> Network --> Advanced --> Proxies, and turn on and fill out whatever proxy you want. If you want to hide your ISP IP address while surfing the web, then fill out the "Web Proxy".

In my opinion, there is no need to mask your ISP IP address for just daily use. If there is something specific where you actually need to, then go ahead. Unless you're just paranoid.

EDIT: here's just a random proxy list that I got from googling.

EDIT 2: If you use a proxy, then you could theoretically be in more danger than if you didn't use a proxy. A scam proxy provider might set up a proxy that also logged all of your packets (a man in the middle attack). Only use proxies from sources you trust.

Torrents

What about with torrents? I have read a few stories about people being busted for there IP addresses, is there any way to block anyone from knowing my location and handing me a lawsuit?

If you don't download anything illegal, you won't have worry about that ;)

I tried using proxy junk on my Mac once and that was because I wanted to watch some television shows that were available to American residents only - damn Canada.

I ended up installing this weird peice of software on my Mac, which of course didn't work. :(

Download Vidalia. It works wonders, it changes your IP address to another IP address from any part of the world.

Go to vidalia.com, click on Download and download the installation bundle for Apple OS X. Make sure you go to download because you need the bundle package in order to make this work.

Once you install it, it will automatically install a plug in on firefox, to activate it, click on the bottom right where it says Tor Disabled, it will automatically enable it.

I really don't think the OP knows very much about proxies or why he even wants to hide/change his IP address.
