Why does my printer application stay open?

I'm running Leopard on multiple Macs, with networked LaserJet printers, and they all have the same minor problem.

Whenever I print, the printer application opens (letting me see the status of printing if I want) but never quits on its own. It's left in the dock until I quit it manually. I'm pretty sure this isn't how it used to work.

Is there a way to keep the printer application from being visible in the dock or to make it quit automatically when the print queue is empty?
 
You are right! I never really noticed, but now I printed few pages and it stays open. Hmm strange

CTRL-CLK on the printer icon and I believe there is an option to "close automatically after printing"
 
I see it now. It's called Auto Quit and it works for me. Thanks, wiley17!

This happens to me in Tiger Server as well. It didn't used to at first, then several months ago it started to happen. I'll print... and the icon will just sit there until I quite it.

Annoying. One of those minor OS X bugs that creeps in somewhere along the line and then sticks around for ages. At least it doesn't break anything 😀
 
Well that's cool! I can't believe I put up with that problem for five months before searching for the answer! Still, auto-quit should have been the default in Leopard, just like in previous system versions.

It was never a problem, you just didn't know the solution. I'm only saying this because people are quick to shout out, "LEOPARD BUG" when there was no bug, they just didn't know what to do.

However Apple should have had the Auto-Quit option turned on by default.😉

I guess we're arguing semantics, but yes, it was a problem. If you don't know how to fix your flat tire, even if you have a spare, it's still a problem. That said, I'm glad to have the solution.
 
It only stays open if you open the window and will stay open even if you have auto quit selected. If you just leave it then it will auto quit as expected.

If you read my post you will notice what I said differs from the way you interpreted it.

If you do not have auto quit clicked on it will stay open.

If you do have auto quit on and do not open the printer window by clicking the icon on the dock then it will auto quit as expected.

If you do have auto quit on and do open the printer window to see the status of the print then it will not auto quit.
