Imac G5 very loud noisy Fan constantly stuck "on"

I was enjoying my quiet new mac until today -- disaster has struck!!

This is not a G5 apparently! but is the new aluminium 24" imac!
Hardware Overview:

I have a new problem my Imac is only a few weeks old . Turned it on today after being completely off over night (with power supply off also) and the moment I touch the on button the fan kicks in full blast and never NEVER goes off - every time now - its a problem!

Will get my apple care on it on Monday but is this a common problem?

The fan has never come on before what ever I do!

devastated this was the quietest machine ever!

Sorted the problem but still not happy that it ever happened!

Someone somewhere mentioned tilting the unit forward - and like a crazy fool I did. Of course the power plug popped out and shut it down dead instantly! and on start up problem solved back to normal - though it was an accident and not reccomended.

A standard restart or shutdown restart did not help even on a stone cold imac.

will try other advice found here next time - its def a manufacture fault - a haphazzard thermostat of some sort! not good for such an expensive machine

I dont care wether or not its a G5 Im just trying to describe it in a quick and uninformed way.

It is the new alumimium Imac 24" there cant be so many variations on that.

But yep the power cord is right there in the centre of the back of machine and it can pop out with a good yank and it did! And the cord IS tight I suppose because all my cables go through the large hole in the ally stand and then through a hole in my desk and then to the power supply I have rigged under the desk where my externals live.

Any way this whole crazy process ( pulling [one way or another] the power supply out of the back of the imac and restarting) is similar to what is prescribed
under " resetting the SMU " by apple as suggested in the post a few above - many thanks for that because that was at least useful! pulling that plug out was an essential for fix me.


I knew it was a hardware problem because I have a bootable external backup of my system and the result was the same - and even prior to the system completing its boot _ Instant! every time!

- is exactly the same as -pulling the power cord out of the back by accident - (best though probably when switched off and as directed by apple) !
