Mac Office 2008 Benchmarks

MacTech benchmarks the new Mac Office 2008 and provides the following conclusion:
Quote:
In general, Office 2008 is faster than Office 2004 when run on Intel Macs. And, on the PowerPC (represented by our PowerBook G4), it certainly runs "well enough" albeit marginally slower.
Microsoft hosted a day-long conference on the new Office 2008. Attendees will reportedly receive a free copy of Office.

I can't wait for it to trickle down to volume licensees. I'm still working with some really old G4s since some users don't budge and use their grant money.

I'll more then likely be using Office 2004 and 2008 on my department installations for some time.

That graph doesn't make sense.

It looks like 2008 runs better on a G4 than on Intel. What's the percentage represent ?

I'm quite pleased with Office 2008 and I'd have upgraded to it even without MS' "SuperSuite" deal incentive.

Word Boot Time

First Post!

I remember way back to around 1987 or so. Word 4 on my SE/30 (8MHz CPU, 4MB ram) booted in under 4 seconds. So Just how far have we come?

Why benchmark a word processor?

Why benchmark a word processor?

This is #1 on my list of things that it is just not worth benchmarking.

Give us real numbers. I want to know what tasks were used for the benchmarks and how long, in seconds, they took. Whether it took 0.5 seconds or 1 second to do a task in Word has no significance to me, so I'm not sure whether the numbers mean anything to me without seeing the raw data.

Yes you are missing patience it would seem as other posters have indicated that the graph indicates that LOWER is BETTER.

Office 2008 runs like treacle on PPC according to that graph. Slower than 2004 on every benchmark bar "graphics". Just how much faster would Office 2004 have been over 2008 had it been compiled for Intel instead?

That's a moot point, because it would have required a rewrite--the code was code that you can't just recompile.

I'm not about to complain... it's not that much slower on the G4, and the perception will be that it's faster, given the interface speed improvements. That's fine. Sounds like both the speed overall and the perceived speed will be well improved on Intel machines. That's great. Office 2004 wasn't all that slow to begin with, other than the load time (at least, on my MBP)
