Amazon
I just checked Amazon and the prices are:
turbo.264 $89.99 eyetv Hybrid $128.96 For new ones, not used. Yes, used ones are cheaper same as elgato website, but why pay the same price for a refurbished item that has already had at least one problem? |

Both devices have been updated. They already get analog cable and OTA Digital channals. They now can receive clear qam channels through your cable connection. I just bought the Hybrid, couldn't pass up that sale price

I purchased the hybrid earlier in the week. I kept hearing people talk about them on various Mac/Apple message boards so I decided to make the jump when I saw that the price came down for MacWorld. Great deal.

Nor could I. I think this will go great with a new 24" iMac.

Too bad all those tuners will stop working in exactly 1 yr.

You might see a bit of a performance boost, but the Turbo.264 really shines on older hardware. However, even newer machines will benefit from the freed-up processor cycles. So if you normally leave a Handbrake queue to encode overnight, then I wouldn't buy the Turbo.264. If you want something running in the background while you do other tasks, then you might want to consider it.

Both, you'll see about a 5x improvement on a G4 or G5 and about a 3x improvement on an Intel Mac. Considering the Intel Macs are about 5x faster than a G4 at this stuff anyway it's a massive speed boost.

That's a tempting price for EyeTV Hybrid.
You'd probably get x3 the performance not having to use the Quicktime encoder.

I have the turbo.264 and as others have said, I see a bigger speed improvement on non-Intel machines. With my iMac G5, it will easily increase my encoding speeds 4-5x or more. Now I can actually encode things in real time or faster. But on my girlfriends MacBook Pro 2.16 CD, the speed increase is not as dramatic. For example, if she was encoding at 80fps, the turbo bumped it to 100fps. But it really depends on what the source file is and what you want the output file to be. If I am exporting to a Standard iPod format, I can get up to 85 fps. If I want to export to AppleTV, it could be 25-30fps. This is still a great deal better than before, were I was getting 4-5fps.
