iLidz Personal Media Viewer

The iLidz Personal Media Viewer was previewed at Macworld, promising "a large screen viewing experience at a fraction of the cost."

Simply insert your iPhone into the iLidz media viewer, look through the magnifying glass and adjust until focused. Voila. Hands free viewing. I can't say I necessarily felt like I was looking at a large screen, I suppose being hands free while watching a movie could be useful.

For the story behind iLidz, see i-lidz.com. The $29.95 iLidz is being fine tuned for mass production.

Ouch, I can see Steve cringing about this.

Nice gadget, but what is up with the 'half-hat' design and the protruding metal bars from the skip?

The hat was just folded in half so people wouldn't have to actually put it on, and could just hold it up.

I eat my words then.

Looking at the site, it is actually not too bad looking. Well, for use on flights etc...

What kind of movie would you be watching where it would be useful to be hands free?

Nice dude. Made me laugh....

They couldn't have designed their own clips? It looks like someone just modded a hat with some supplies from Staples. It's functional I guess, but not very nice looking. And you would think that the magnifying glass so close to your eyes would cause some vision damage with prolonged use.

LOL! That is just too funny! I love the paper clips holding the magnifying screen! Talk about a prototype! :-)

I'd be more impressed with a simpler product that would just velcro to the airplane seat in front of you so you could watch hands free on a plane. Hey... a freebie idea for these guys! :-)

BAHAHAHA!!!! Priceless reply!

Don't know if I'd ever buy or use it, but you have to hand it to the guy for marketing it. It's like something I'd see at my kid's science fair!

Agreed. Come on, is that even necessary? Just use own of those little plastic stands that comes with the iPod touch.

you've got to be kidding me...

That is the most idiotic accessory I've ever seen. I wouldn't be caught dead with that thing on... You might as well add a set of braces, headgear, a pair of broken black rimmed glasses taped together with masking tape, a pocket protector, a short sleeve plaid shirt buttoned all the way to the top, and brown high water pants pulled up to your nipples and cinched by a belt.. that should make the picture complete.

My mom found that picture and sent it to me and laughed at me. Gotta love it.

Well, I still got the pic of Sinbad

but i will say... it did work as advertised. Made the picture seem much larger than it was. If you can get over the stigma, it is a great concept. And remember it won't be quite as gnarly when they have it ready for mass production.

"Handsfree"

In all seriousness though, I could see myself buying something a bit similar to this if it were dirt cheap and had the option of a kind of blackout cloth around it. Not for what you might imagine although I would use it in bed. The girlfriend goes to bed hours before I do. I often stay up much later or I might listen to an audiobook and sometimes I like to watch tv shows. It'd be nicer being able to do that in the bedroom. She hates any form of lights in the bedroom so it would need to be able to black out the rest of the world. I don't care how stupid I look if its in the dark after all.

Yeah, at least this one only makes you look like Geordi La Forge, instead of a Linux freetard.

Wink Is it okay to say a few words as the inventor who built it?

Hi,
As the crazy person who invented this gadget I hope it's ok to post a comment. First of all I'm dog tired from having the ride of my life at MacWorld '08. I feel like I've finally found my extended family. Everybody was very, very cool, everybody had a great sense of humor and every person who tried it was amazed at the effect. As for the iLidz™, all I can say is I dared myself and then kept moving forward...Think different and then Just Do It! My two good brain cells fired at the same time and this is what came out! Two posts ago Spanky Deluxe hit the bulls eye as to what inspired me to make it. It's not for looking cool or walking down the street or for driving a car. It's for those times when you don't care who's around. One of the things that kept me going was the fact that I'm able to lay back in bed with my head in my pillow and watch a movie as if it was on a about a 65" display and not wake up my wife! I'd easily wear it on an airplane, there's nothing worse when the in-flight movie sucks. The other reason, both my wife and I have iPhones which was quite expensive and I'd never slap down the $250-$300 to buy a "cool" pmv, plus my kids would probably break it in a day. So, this alternative does the same thing for $29.95 and it's almost unbreakable!
