Why can't I turn on my keyboard backlight?

When I click F8, F9, F10 I get the following box below and nothing happens. What's going on?

Yeah. It doesn't work as you would expect it too.
Use Lab Tick if you want more control over your keyboards backlight.

The keyboard will automatically light up when there it's dark. The F8 key toggles this behavior. The F9 and F10 key increases and decrease the brightness only if it is already on.

As noted, you can't control the brightness levels unless the backlight is on, which occurs automatically.

Under the left speaker grille, there is an ambient light sensor that gives information the computer on how much light is around, and the computer uses that to determine how to automatically adjust the keyboard backlighting and screen brightness.

Yup, "illuminate keyboard in low light conditions" is checked.

Maybe this is another stupid question, but is it actually dark enough in the room to trigger backlighting?
