Does the mail app download emails or 'streams' them?

hi, I'd like to know whether the emails are all downloaded to the iphone or loads them as you touch (sort of like a web based email) because it can cost quite a fortune to dl all the email contents when on EDGE...

Hint hint, not a at&t customer with the unlimited data plan am I? 😀
