Apple and Pepsi Giving Away 100 Million Songs

Steve Jobs said during his speech today, that Apple's goal was to reach 100 Million downloads in the iTunes Music Store by April of 2004.

Beyond the AOL partnership and iTunes for Windows, Steve revealed another partnership that will easily help Apple reach that goal.

Apple and Pepsi are giving away 100 Million Free Songs starting on February 1, 2004. 100 million winning codes will be written on caps of 20ounce and 1 Liter bottles of Pepsi, Diet Pepsi, and Sierra Mist.

The Pepsi iTunes promo will kick off with a Superbowl Advertisement, finally bringing Apple's name back to that advertising event.

Something tells me I'll be buying a lot of Pepsi, even though I prefer Coke.

Too bad this couldn't happen immediately. i wonder why. February is a long time away.

But this is only a minor disappointment on this great day!

Great! I am a fan of Pepsi products, I just wish they'd included Mountain Dew. I drink far more Mountain Dew than Pepsi. I'm getting tired of winning a free 20 oz Dew all the time. To tell you the truth, I miss the days when you could drink a pop without having to remember to look under the lid, but hell, this is big time exposure for iTMS. Go Apple@

Let's talk REVENUE

Let's talk REVENUE

Apple did about $380m on laptops domestically and about $440m (top of head not exact) on powermacs.

Apple just announced iTunes for windows (the other 90-95% of the market that already made Apple the #1 music distributor worldwide.

Apple just announced a partnership with Pepsi on promotion and Pepsi runs ALOT of ads on Radio, TV, display print, reytail POP, on product packaging and others like appearances. Apple just cinched huge promotional, mindshare and product awareness to the offline masses.

Apple just annnounced access to AOL's entire customer base INCLUDING their payment methods.

If this does not drive Apple stock up, nothing will!

Damn, 100 Million songs.....I wonder how much that's actually going to cost pepsi and Apple.....

But I don't think there will be a problem getting people to drink pepsi....

I might have to start looking for the ones my friends don't use (I don't drink soda in general).

It's all coming together...

Steve Jobs has worked this music plan perfectly. This is all coming together for Apple, and this promotion is going to be killer.

Kudos to Apple...

can we say TRUMP CARD. This is apples big play. They are the only pc manufacturer besideds dell that can turn a profit. I can definately see Jobs "media company" plan working out great. It's just too bad that us mac heads will still have to listen to peecee zealots drone on about the "inferiority" of apple's. To those zealots I say "keep your lemon, I'll take the apple."

Why February?

I was wondering why the Pepsi promo doesn't start until February and I think the SuperBowl ad is just a smoke screen.

I think that the reason for the delay is the lack of international rights for the iTunes music store. I wonder whether this promo will be worldwide, or at least in Canada and Europe as well.

So with a bit of hand waving, I'm anticipating the international iTunes Music Store will definitely be done by February 1st, which agrees with Steve Jobs comments the other week. So Pepsi drinkers outside the states will be able to benefit as well!

So I guess selling 100 million songs in the first year isn't going to be that tough if they are giving 100 million songs away. Obvoiusly, they won't all be redeemed, but I think many will.

Doe the SuperBowl ad thing have anything to do with LoopRumors superbowl ad rumor?

"100 Million Dollars"...er...Songs...

That's a lot of free downloads. Apple is making some HUGE strides lately, partnering up with AOL alone is gonna hopefully do some serious things for them.

Brilliant.

Simply brilliant. I'm not a Pepsi drinker, but they've been targeting the youth demo for years. This is a match made in marketing heaven.

Awww...

Pepsi...

Why no Coke?

Aw well, we all know this is gonna be rigged.

They 'Give away 100 Million' and there are only really 10 Million Bottles with them being winning... and fewer acually are gonna download the songs... ect.

start buying Pepsi

I don't mind either. However, this will push me to drink Pepsi rather than Coke come Feb.

Smart marketing ploy on Apple's part. Like we are ever going to see another music company team up with a corporate giant (I could just see it, Napster and Meow Mix).

I prefer Coke too, but I'll buy Pepsi while it goes on.
It's very few campaigns, that can change the way I buy products, but this will do it. Just like I buy a ton of Kelloggs to get the American Airlines miles from the boxes.

I was thinking that too.
In another thread about iPods I was saying that Apple should have some commericals that are a bit more fun, hipper or that just have a storyline.
Maybe we'll see some great commercials from them, I hope so.
The superbowl commercials always have to outdo each other and we all know how Apple likes bragging rights, so they probably have something awesome up their sleeve.

Hehe... last time Apple and Pepsi had anything to do with each other, the former was trying to steal the latter's CEO.

I wonder what the superbowl ad will be...

Contracts delaying Pepsi?

It could be that Pepsi previously was in contracts (promotions for different sports things, etc.) for the near future. I noticed the Dew products are carrying a new promo now. So could be they had another promotion barring the iTMS one from starting immediately.

I think this sucks. Now Apple is in on ruining our youth's teeth. Buy stock in dentistry.

I wonder how many of the 100 mil will be redeemed?
