Powermac G4 Hard drive problems

I am stacking a series of 3 hard drives into an old powermac to use as a sort of server. i currently have a smallish hard drive in the bay for the zip drive that holds the operating system, this is set to master. I planned on having a pair of hard drives in the drive carrier mounted on the bottom of the case. for some reason, the machine is not recognized through a firewire network when both drives are hooked up. When only one drive is attatched, there are no problems with machine recognition. the jumpers on both drives are set to slave. any ideas on what is going on?

Thanks!
