FW ports screwed with iPod

Just recently, my iPod stopped mounting on my iMac. It still charges but it just won't connect. It's not the iPod cos I tested it on other machines. What happened do you think? Both don't work.
 
do other firewire devices function from the iMac? It could, i suppose, be the FW controller, as power is probably added separately... so it may still have power, but no communications ability... on the other hand, i don't know what i'm talking about.

my first thought would be the cable, but if you tested the iPod on other systems, you probably used the same cable...
