TimeMachine - Need to Change Ext. Hard Drive

Love TimeMachine. Recently I had to go back 2 weeks and recover from a problem. Worked great.

Mistake: When I started TimeMachine I used an external disk that was far too small. I have bought a 500GB Firewire disk and want to switch over . . . . but I don't want to lose the information on the smaller hard drive with which I started out.

Is there a way to safely move the backup data from the original small HD to the new larger HD? Can I just copy it over and turn the small disk off? Will TimeMachine recognize it on the new disk?

Any thoughts about where I might find the answer? Anyone tried this?

I think you basically need to clone the old drive to the new drive. Not sure if you'd need to delete hidden files like one of the posts said.
