possible to re-install Tiger?

Hi,

Is it possible to re-install Tiger without being a huge hassle meaning backing everything up and figuring out how the applications that were downloaded, how I can get them going again? Can I make a clone of my hard drive on a external HD and then re-install Tiger and bring applications, documents, keychains, mail etc. etc. back to the internal HD? Any suggestions?
