A friend and I are starting a personal research project and would love to have a central website that we could use to compile all of our information and research. We have been using Google Docs up to this point, but would like something more expandable and all that. Creating our own wiki seems like the way to go but we have no idea where to start. I have looked through a few free online services but they are full of ads...and not too well put together. Serving up our own isn't out of the question but I have no idea how to start that either. Does anyone have personal experience with wikis?

Try Bloxio.us. It's free, has no ads, and also has built in Wordpress plus phpbb2/3. In other words:

Wordpress MU + Wiki (same as the one that powers Wikipedia) + Forum
