Mac OS X 10.5.2 Problems Help [CONSIDERING VISTA.]

Hey back again.
This time i really really peed off at leopard.
IM ACTUALLY CONSIDERING GOING TO VISTA.
I upgraded from 10.5.1 to 10.5.2 and have had nothing but problems.
Every time i boot up my mac my "Macintosh HD" is missing i have to type in a new script just so it shows for 5 mins, And ive just found out ALL of my .AVI movies have disappeared in a day, they were all there yesterday and not today, Apple have screwed me over and over again and im sick of it.
Im considering moving back to windows, the problems were vast, but they were not this severe.

xUKHCx gave so good advice. Have you tried reinstalling the operating system from scratch? The majority of us have used OS X for years without any significant trouble.
 
what do you mean reinstall?
Reboot from the Leopard 10.5.1 disc?
Or reinstall the new update (10.5.2)?

What I meant by from scratch is from the original installer discs. Which version of OS X is on them?
 
Clean install and upgrade to Mac OSX 10.5.2 before you install anything else.

That's what I did and I haven't any problems at all (aside from a few glitches I mentioned in another thread).

I always think it is worth just reapplying the latest combo update on the current install rather than going down the complete reinstall route. Best case scenario it works (potential time saved = large) worst case it doesn't work, complete reinstall (time lost little)
 
I really cant lose all my files they are so important documents.
Videos and other files.
I cant risk losing them.
Is there another way, try phoning Birmingham Apple Store tommorow?
See what they suggest?

I'm going to go out on a limb and hope that you have some sort of backup.

I had nothing against your suggestion. I was simply asking if they ever have done a clean install after having all of these problems.

My only back up hard drive is formatted to NTFS (my windows computer) i think because i can read but not write on my hard drive.

I will try reinstalling 10.5.2 before i make any rash decisions, because losing ALL my files would just elevate the problem i have now to a MAJOR SCALE.
 
Check the trash can for your missing .avi files.
Also, try typing the name of one in to Spotlight and see if you can find it that way. Hopefully, you've just misplaced them (maybe an accidental drag-and-drop).

If files really are spontaneously disappearing, you've got a bad hard drive.
 
No this problem is not a bad hard drive.
This never happened ever before i upgraded to 10.5.2 the moment my computer restarted my Mac HD was no more and my avi files.
Checked my trash ..nothing, spotlight is only coming up with... Knocked Up.nfo ( information files for my dvd)

I suggest getting a backup solution if losing your files is a problem of MAJOR SCALE. It doesn't seem to be right now if you aren't backing up.

The most common cause has been the loss of access to your home directory. It happens more often then you think.

Is this the "spot what is missing" game?

Wow, a film is missing from its folder. Sure you haven't moved it anywhere? Upgrading to 10.5.2 wouldn't move files like that around.

Just do as others have said, get an external hard drive (they cost next to nothing now-a-days), use Time Machine and backup your Mac. Then format and install Mac OS X 10.5 again. Then run the combo update.
 
i have not, there ripped from my dvd to my HD so i wouldn't have to keep putting them in.
And i also save my password to ebay in the name so no one would find it.
I have fixed my problem, by reinstalling 10.5 much better ill think twice about ever upgrading my leopard again.

Just recovering from 10.5.2 issue.

You always have the option to install 10.5 again and save the old system.

That way will all other files not be deleted and the old system stored with all its file.

Then do the Combo-upgrade to 10.5.2.

Btw, I'm glad it worked out for you.

Probably because he thought a whooooole bunch of us would immediately shout Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! and desperately dive in and bend over backwards to help him.

...when in fact, the initial reaction most of us had was "BYE! Good luck with Vista! See ya in a week!"
