how do you get time machine NOT to backup mail?

sorry, can't figure this out. but i'd imagine this takes up a lot of space that i don't need it to. thanks.
 
Just exclude your mail directory from within Time Machine's prefs (Time Machine / Options - press the plus button and then navigate to your mail directory in ~/Library)
