Five Million Post Avatar Contest

MacRumors has passed its five millionth forum post. To celebrate, we are having a Five Million Post Avatar Contest.

Create a new, original avatar, enter the contest following the contest rules, and you may win the ultimate prize: MacRumors bragging rights!

You'll also win a "contest winner" badge next to all of your posts, the right to use your winning avatar, whether or not you have made 500 posts, and your place among our Past Contest Winners.

Winners will be chosen in three categories:
  1. Best Static Avatar
  2. Best Animated Avatar
  3. Best MacRumors-Themed Avatar
Finalists will be selected in each category by the moderators based on technical skill, creativity, humor, and suitability for the MacRumors-Themed category. The winner in each of the three categories will be chosen by a public poll among the finalists. All MacRumors members will be eligible to vote for the three winners.

The contest has begun. Entries will be accepted for the next week, starting today. The entry period closes at the end of the day on Sunday, March 2, 2008, midnight eastern time.

To enter the contest, see the rules in the next post. To see the contest entries, watch the threads in the 5,000,000 Post Contest forum.

Avatars can be created with almost any graphics or image editing program. If you have questions or can provide answers about avatar creation, take the opportunity to learn or help others by posting in the Avatar Tips thread.

We're holding the contest just for fun, and we hope you enjoy creating one or more new avatars, seeing what others come up with, and helping select the winners.

General Rules

1. Eligibility. Any active MacRumors member can enter the contest and vote for the winners. Contest entries are by individuals; no team entries. You do not need 500 posts to enter the contest. You can enter as many (dissimilar) avatars as you like, but you can win in at most one category. MacRumors administrators and moderators may enter the contest, but those involved in selecting finalists are not eligible to win.

2. Originality. Contest avatars must be new work done by you.

3. Entries. Each contest entry is the first and only attachment to the first post in a thread in the 5,000,000 Post Contest forum.

4. Avatar size. Avatars must be within the size limits for forum avatars: jpeg, gif, or png files, at most 75x75 pixels and at most 20,000 bytes (19.5KB). Oversize avatars are not eligible.

5. Comments. Anyone may post comments in contest entry threads. They are not part of the contest entry or judging.

6. Etiquette. All contest entries must be family-friendly and in good taste. All forum rules apply. Do not campaign for your entry or against "rival" entries.

How to Enter the Contest

To enter the contest:
  1. Click here to start a new thread in the 5,000,000 Post Contest forum.
  2. Give the thread any title you want.
  3. Use the Manage Attachments button to upload and attach your avatar. Do not attach any other files.
  4. You may convert your avatar to an inline attachment but this is not necessary.
  5. Include any text you like, e.g., a description of your avatar, how you made it, where you got the idea, etc. The forum software requires that you include some text; you can type "my contest entry" if you have nothing else to say.
  6. Submit your new thread!

Notes

1. You may not use IMG/TIMG/URL tags to link to an image elsewhere on the Internet or even at MacRumors. Your avatar entry must be attached to your post.

2. You do not have to indicate which contest category your avatar is for. Non-animated avatars will be considered for the Best Static Avatar and Best MacRumors-Themed Avatar categories. Animated avatars will be considered for the Best Animated Avatar and Best MacRumors-Themed Avatar categories.

3. We ask that you not enter multiple similar avatars. If you've made multiple versions of an avatar, enter the one that you consider best.

Contest Winners

1. Entry period. Once the contest entry period ends, the forum moderators will make an announcement in this thread, determine eligible avatars, select finalists, and prepare polls to let members vote for the winning entries. Contest entry posts that are subsequently edited may become ineligible.

2. Judging. The moderators will select finalists in each category based on technical skill, creativity, and humor. In the MacRumors-Themed category, suitability for the theme will also be judged. Evaluations will not be based on thread title, post text, whether or not you use an inline image, or other posts in the thread.

3. Voting. Polls will be open for a stated number of days. We encourage all members to vote based on technical skill, creativity, and humor. Do not cast votes based on personal popularity, member status, or other factors not related to the contest.

4. Ties. The entry with the highest vote count wins the contest. If a poll results in a tie, the winner is the contest entry posted first (with the lowest thread number).

5. Rules. It is your responsibility to follow the rules for your entry to be eligible to win. If you have comments or questions about the contest rules and procedures, post them in this thread. If you don't follow the rules, we may disqualify your entry without notification.

6. Problems. Should unforeseen circumstances arise or rule interpretations be necessary, the moderators will make the decisions. We'll do our best to keep it fair and fun!

Good luck, contestants!

Best MacRumors-Themed Avatar
The polls will be open until the end of the day this coming Friday.

The winners of the Five Million Post Avatar Contest, as selected by our forum members, are

Best Static Avatar

Mitthrawnuruodo: iTunes classic
Best Animated Avatar

kkat69: MacRumors open all day EVERYDAY
Best MacRumors-Themed Avatar

xUKHCx: All your avatars are belong to us
The three winners have received "contest winner" badges. Since we have forum moderators among the winners, it's worth mentioning that we were very careful to run the contest fairly, and participating moderators were not part of the panel that selected the finalists.

Congratulations to the winners and thank you to everyone who participated in the contest and helped us celebrate passing the 5 million post mark!

I just can't get over that classic iTunes logo! Someone needs to make that a usable icon, NOW!

Congrats to all the winners!
