You can't. Only the ringtone.

I feel your pain brotha, I would really like to use the Red Alert klaxon for text messages (as I get very few) or a better new mail sound, but alas, not yet.

That is incorrect!! you can install custom sms tones into the iphone, but you need to SSH into your phone and change them there! You wont be able to change the name of the original ones i.e. tri-tone;chime etc. So what you need to do is choose whatever sms tone you like doesn't matter how long it is, convert it to .aif or .aiff then rename the extension .caf!!!! But here's the catch, you will also need to change the name of your tone to "sms-received1.caf" and you can only put 6 tones in the phone because you only have 6 tones to choose from in "settings". I have changed all 6 of mine, the best one being "excuse me boss you have a text message"!!! you can also make the dialer say the number you are tapping instead of the boring stock one, and you can also change the mail tone, I myself have the "You've got mail" tone. So yes, you can do all these things and more, you just need to know how to ssh into your iphone... And I do believe there is an app in installer that automatically does this but I have no need to try it out. Good luck .....!!!

Hi mate. Thanks for the reply. I got a few questions

1. When u say ssh into my phone is that the same as sftp into the phone and logging in with root and alpine? If so do u know what folder the ringtones are in?

2. How do I change it to aif and aiff

3. Do u add 6 more in addition to the standard 6? Or do u rename the standard 6?

Many thanks

Ok, heres what you do, sftp into your phone go to-
System

Library

Audio

UIsounds

now scroll down to where you see sms-received1.caf thru sms-received6.caf these are your stock sms tones! And to answer your question you will rename YOUR sms tones to sms-received1.caf and so on, for example:

"Godfather.mp3", you will need to convert this with an audio converter such as "Switch Audio Converter",to "Godfather.aiff", then after that, you rename it "sms-received1.caf", then you replace the original one with this one by dragging it over to the original one and copying it, a window will pop-up saying "do you want to replace this file", just click yes!!! But when you look in your phone, by going to Settings - Sounds - New Text Message, you will still see your stock sms tone names ie: Tri-tone, Chime, etc., so just listen to them 1 by 1 to see which is which !! You can also do this to any file that has a .caf extension like new-mail.caf,sent-mail.caf and even the dialing numbers of the dialer. Sorry if this not quite "direct-to-the-point" but i'm really better at showing then explaining... Anyway, just post-up again if you have anymore questions. Good luck mate..

Ok I converted the file to "AIFF" then renamed it "sms-received1.caf" but when I dragged it over to SFTP Folder, over the orginal file, it makes a folder that says sms-received1.caf.aiff

What am I doing wrong?

Make sure that when you rename it ".caf" that you delete the .aiff.

You're not actually converting anything. You simply rename the file and change the file extension.

So right click, hit rename, change .mp3 to .caf. Easy!

twonga ur a champion, i followed your instructions and it worked great, now to get 5 more worthy sms tones to use. I backed up the original caf files on my pc just in case something went wrong.

to the poster who lost his/her original sms tone, email me or post a reply and i will email you the one you are missing.. just SSH it back into the folder.

i used WinSCP to SSH into my iphone, you can easily google that. grab the IP of your iphone by checking out the wi-fi settings, then enter that in along with root/alpine as the login/password.

then navigate to SYSTEM, LIBRARY, AUDIO, UISOUNDS and follow the previous posts to get the custom sms tones.

great job

lets say you have an mp3 file you want to use as the sms tone called Music.mp3, you use SWITCH AUDIO (google this) to convert the mp3 to AIFF.

as a result you will get a file called Music.aiff , rename this file to sms-received1.caf and replace the original file by logging into your iphone with WinSCP and going to /SYSTEM/LIBRARY/AUDIO/UISOUNDS, this is for 1.1.3

i think 1.1.4 is different but im not sure.
