I used www.iphonespeedtest.com and was only getting around 250 kbps. Is that bad? I'm right next to my router (wireless g with cable modem).

You should be able to achieve the same speeds that your ISP advertises; or with cable - at least the same as any other systems in the local network. Note - Cable internet is subject to slow-downs due to neighborhood traffic; but you should still be able to achieve >80% of the ISP's advertised transfer rates. I have 8M cable; and am consistently ~7-7.7M on all systems in the LAN.
Weird when I use mobilespeedtest.com I get anywhere from 3-5 MB/s. Compared to 500 KB/s. Maybe that iphonespeedtest.com is just bogus and isn't accurate.

I'm not sure where the claims of 7.7 mbs come from. I have upgraded my internet with Comcast and get a max of 18 megabits download, and the Iphonespeed tests give me ~155-213 kilobits results. And I have and excellent Cisco WAP and am literally sitting right next to it.
I seriously challange anyone to show me results of 7 mbps. I just don't think it is possible with the iphone. Maybe the iphonespeedtest.com website itself is slow?

"because iPhone (currently) lacks flash or java support, it's hart to get an
accurate measure of performance". iphonespeedtest.com claim is totally bogus, as mobilespeedtest.com shows a more reasonable speed.

Taken moments ago (Hawai'i Standard Time) --- Saturday afternoon ~4pm - 8M Oceanic (Time Warner) Cable internet; behind a Linksys WRT54GS Wireless G router (set to 802.11G) - 3 PC laptops + 1 PC desktop + iPhone + Vonage phone + Oceanic Phone all connected right now (all but the desktop connected via wireless) - presently on the Vonage phone too...

I ran the test a few times on Edge, as I was curious what the actual speed was from Edge. It repeatedly gives me 48 mbps, which can not be right. I expect its some kind of a page cache'ing thing somewhere causing inaccurate results.
If I use Wifi, I get around 3mbps, which is around 80% of the speed my cable internet connection is capable of. So at least the wifi test is much more realistic, even if still not entirely accurate.
The iPhone5 maxes out at around 92Mbps (the rest of the 150Mbps is error correction) with a 5ghz router. You need a router that provides a strong signal, because the antennas on the phone are a smaller than those on a laptop.

And on my iPhone on Wi-Fi - 49.69 / 9.96

iPhones don't tell the true speed of your network/ Internet speed BTW. My PC tells me 58 download and 27 upload. My ISP said I get 50 down and 25 up. My iPhone got 35 download and 18 upload which is still great.
