My 15'' 2.4ghz MacBook Pro will only wake up from sleep about 50% of the time. I have tried waiting for several minutes, but the only solution seems to be holding down the power button, and then restarting. Is there anything i can do to fix this?

MacBook Pro Won't Wake from Sleep

Occasionally when I put my MacBook Pro to sleep it won't wake properly. The computer starts up but the screen doesn't show anything. Sometimes if I wait a long time it will turn on or if I unplug the power cord but other times I am forced to hold the power button down and reboot the machine. Has anyone experienced this/know a fix? Thanks.

I'm running Leopard 10.5.2 on a MBP SR by the way.

same issue!

try downloading the latest keyboard update. They may fix it.

smc and pram reset may help.

if all else fails try an archive and install.

Hey guys. I had this problem, may still.... but it's gone for now. Mine would be either a dark screen, or a screen filled with static. I could only hard restart with the power button.

I have a stock 2.2 MBP running 10.5.2 fully updated.

After searching all over the intarwebs, I found two possibilities:

Safe Sleep:
I found an article, can't remember where, that explained how to use Terminal to turn off Safe Sleep, which I thought worked for a bit... but didn't prove to be a permenent fix.

iStat:
I imported my data from another machine when I got it. I had iStat installed on the other computer and so it was transferred over.
I uninstalled it, and it hasn't happened again.

Good luck! I know it sucks!!!

Same here. MBP SR 2.2 with 10.5.2 and Keyboard update.

I think this has something to do with either the 10.5.2 or recent keyboard update. I've never had this until very recently. I'm leaning towards the keyboard update

On mine though it only happens when I try to wake the laptop from sleep when not plugged in.

I'm going to uninstall iStat and see if I notice a change. I'll report my findings here.

I am having issues restarting (computer is on but unresponsive, have to hold button or remove battery and restart), where I get a panic notice every time I reboot.

I think the updates that came out were a little premature. There will probably be another fix for the laptops really soon. I hope...

Strike my last comment.

I just lost data, when my MBP wouldn't wake from sleep....

UGH.

Have any of you contacted Apple?

I'm wondering what my options are.

I don't like the feeling of dropping a serious amount of cash on a non-working laptop, or a laptop that can't sleep, more accurately.

I had the same problem. I'm almost 100% sure it is the istat Pro widget. You can either remove it completely or just disable the "Network" section. It was an instant cure for me. My MBP now sleeps and wakes normally.

I have the exact same problem.
Open the lid on my C2D MacBook Pro to wake it. The machine wake up, but the screen stay black. In 4 out of 5 times I have to hard reset (push and hold the power button).

Running 10.5.2, with no iStat Pro

pmset -g | grep hibernatemode

Update...

I entered this command at the terminal to change the safesleep mode to 0, and I haven't had the same problem so far....

This command allows you to see what mode you are in...
Code:
pmset -g | grep hibernatemode

This command changes it to NO SafeSleep
Code:
sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 0

Here's hoping!!!

p.s. here's the link to the site that I got the info from...

I've had my MBP since last October, and only experienced this a handful of times. But recently, about 80% of the time when I open my MBP it won't wake up, and have to do a hard restart. The best I can narrow it down, the timing of the issue corresponds with the keyboard update. A solution would be wonderful.

same issue - now I can't use an external monitor with lid down

Freaking pissing me off. How do I uninstall this stupid keyboard update?

I just got a 23" Apple Cinema Display today. I'm trying to sort it out with my MBP 2.2 in "clamshell" mode, but it doesn't seem to work!

I close the MBP after they're both in mirror mode, then try and press a key on the (external) keyboard, move/click the mouse, press the ACD power button, but only rarely does it wake the MBP up. It often just ignores it, but sometimes works. Seems a bit hit and miss!

Can anyone help?

MBP 2.3 17" has a problem when starting or waking. I just upgraded from 10.4.11 and never had this problem. Recently upgraded to 10.5.0 and then immediately to 10.5.2. Installed the updated graphics software and the keyboard software update. My issue is intermittent waking or start up with a black screen. I can use the "F2" key to enable the screen to brighten up and it does. Works fine otherwise. This is the only issue and I'd like some input.

I've been having the same problem with my MBP so I googled it and found this article http://www.silvermac.com/2006/how-to-save-your-macbook-pro-hard-drive/ Not sure if this is why I'm having the problem, but I am a student and use my MBP to take notes so usually, as soon as class ends I shut the lid and put it in its travel case. I've also reset the PRAM and disabled the network section of iStat Pro. Hopefully I won't have this problem anymore.

won't wake up

MBP 2.2, 160GB, 10.5.2
My MBP is having similar problems - but only since the most recent update. As I recall, it was the keyboard update (which ironically was supposed to FIX a wake-up problem), and graphics update. It seems to fail to wake up whenever there is wrinkle in the wake up process - ie lid opens and closes again before fully waking, usb activity (from a mouse or unpluging the hub) causes it to come out of sleep etc. It "wakes" to a black screen, and F2 does nothing to brighten it up - unlike a previous post. I end up having to hold the power button down to shut it off and then re-boot.  Seems to wake ok if I close the lid and am careful to not move the mouse, unplug the hub (when will they add more USB ports to this thing anyway!), or re-open the lid before it is fully asleep - ie blinking light (which takes about 20 sec or so)
Might try disabling safe-sleep, since I never let the batt get to 0% anyway, and I don't leave apps open either - so lost data isn't really a risk for me.
I agree with some previous posters that it definitely seems to have something to do with the most recent keyboard update:( - I did not have this problem before!

Update

disabled safesleep - nicely speeds up sleeping and waking, but hasn't fixed the wake to black screen. I think I have narrowed the occurrence down to a specific instance - if anything causes the MBP to wake up while the lid is closed, (usually usb activity - though opening and re-closing the lid before it is fully awake does the same thing) then it seems to hang in the wake up process - it's not asleep (indicator light is out), but not fully awake (screen is black). If I move the mouse while the lid is closed, the indicator light goes out and the apple logo lights up - evidence of it waking up, so then I open the screen and for a fleeting second I see the login / password screen - just before black. If I don't open it right away, it appears to go back to sleep mode, so then I open the lid and still - black screen. Interestingly, it is a dark black screen - powered on but black - not the greenish tinted black you see when the power is off. F2 has no effect, and no amount of waiting or keypressing gets past it - have to hard re-boot. Basically, it seems that a closed MBP has to be woke up only by opening the lid - and it cannot be disturbed while doing so. If it is asleep with the lid already open, any normal waking action is fine. Kinda frustrating. APPLE? LISTENING? NEW UPDATE TO FIX THIS?? (especially since it seems their last update caused it!!)
(note - I am going to try disabling the password on wake - see if that has any effect - EDIT - no effect.)

Also having the same issue. It used to only be occasionally, but now it's happening more than 95% of the time I put it to sleep! No one I've read about seems to have it happening this often. This began only a few days ago, I'm not sure when I installed the keyboard update, is there some way to check? I reset the power manager, and the PRAM. That didn't help. I disconnected it from everything, including the airport and that didn't help. I called apple, of course, they didn't help. I just disabled iStat Pro and changed my hibernate mode to 0. Hopefully that will help. It really bothers me to do the hard restart, let alone multiple times a day. I know it's waking up, because I can hear adium sign in, and it chime if I have email, and the keyboard will light up, but nothing from the screen. Grrr, if this doesn't fix it I'm going to hurl the thing at the wall. I live two hours away from an apple store (my college town doesn't have one, good old Savannah, GA) and I won't be going home (where there is an apple store) for two weeks. This of course happens just when I think everything is going well with my MBP, when I haven't had any devastating problems since last August. I'll let you know if it gets better.

Sounds pretty similar to my problem... everything seems to wake up except the screen stays black. It did it again this morning - without any usb interference - I opened the lid, and same as above - everything came up except the screen.

Yay, I'm not the only one who has this issue... but still, it sucks :-(

I can say that I don't think it was related to the keyboard firmware update. My MBP (Late 2007 2.4 SR) was doing this well before the keyboard update. It drives me crazy because I could never make it happen on demand.

I usually put my MBP to sleep and stuff it in my work bag. Most days, it doesn't come back out until I get back home - and when I go to wake it (with nothing plugged in) the majority of the time it never comes back.

Apple seriously needs to fix this crap  it's driving me insane.
