Well, it also includes a different version of the processor that's 2.5Ghz vrs 2.4 and has a 6MB cache instead of 3MB.

And a 250GB HD instead of 200GB.

But yeah, that's a big premium.

No, we're not paying anything. If you choose to pay $500 extra, you will get an extra 256 mb of video memory, an extra 100 mhz of clock speed, and an extra 50 GB of storage space. That's what you may or may not be paying.

Thank God. Now maybe we won't hear about MBP updates in every other thread.

You're also paying for double the CPU L2 cache. (T8300 to T9300 Penryn).

Seems like you're paying a lot for a little here.

Going from 256 MB to 512 MB with a mid-range card like that is going to do hardly anything. The extra L2 cache might be noticeable, but it's not like the base model would be unbearably slow thanks to the smaller L2 cache. Smart money is with the base model and 17" here. Mid-range is just even more ridiculous than the previous model.

No. You're paying for slightly faster processors, 50GB more HD space and the 256MB VRam of which you speak.

Ouch. Have they always charged you for the Apple remote? Because they do now. $19.

No, they didn't - mine came with my 17" MBP for free. Cheap bastards. If you're going to pay damned near $3000 for a laptop then they can throw in a bloody $20 remote control for free. Normally you get more stuff as standard with later models, not less...

I wasn't in the market for a new MBP but I'm honestly pretty disgusted to see that the remote is an "optional extra" now. For shame, Apple.

Don't be so dramatic. The vast majority of people never use the remote on a laptop anyway. The U.S. is heading for a recession and they want to maxmize profits as much as possible. Business 101. Sucks, yes indeed, but, by your same logic you're spending $3000 on a laptop, can't you afford an extra $20 for a remote?

I ordered! It's my first Mac, and this is my last PC. I'll be gone when it gets here, so I get to come back to it!

MBP:
2.5GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
MacBook Pro 15-inch Widescreen Display
2GB 667 DDR2 SDRAM - 2x1GB
200GB Serial ATA @ 7200 rpm
SuperDrive 8X (DVD+/-R DL/DVD+/-RW/CD-RW)
Backlit Keyboard/Mac OS - U.S. English
Accessory Kit

The excitement is overwhelming. At least until it gets here. THEN it'll be overwhelming!

This has probably been said a thousand times before but I think this is obvious signs of Apple updating their whole way of dealing with remotes. They don't ship free with most products now and other little signs like they no longer stick to the iMac. The next revision of the iMac would be perfect timing to phase it out and perhaps get rid of the Mighty Mouse too IMHO.

They will come out with something everybody and their brother wants as an accessory and charge accordingly for it is my guess.

it's the principle of the thing..taking options away and making people pay for them is annoying to say the least..besides it probably costs apple about $2 to make them. They're trying to maximize profits at the expense of the buyer..so the buyer has had a remote for a few gens and can't live without it..so now let them pay more for it. Lame.

besides...dells have had remotes standard for years now

I am really confused, probably like other people. The European versions of the 2 later MBP models only have 256MB of GDDR3 SDRAM in the graphics cards whereas the US version have 512MB!

US : http://www.apple.com/macbookpro/specs.html
UK/ES : http://www.apple.com/uk/macbookpro/specs.html

What a con!

I was wrong. They have added the media keys to the computer. At last you can skip tracks and pause your music on your MacBook Pro easily:

Since I'm upgrading from a 12" PB 1GHz G4 with 32MB VRAM I think the base 15" model will suffice. Definitely adding the Apple Remote for £14.

My question then:
- 250GB 5200RPM or 200GB 7200RPM?

Bear in mind that I'm coming from the machine above with a 4200 drive, it will be miles quicker and I really want all the space I can get. Does 7200 adversley affect battery life? Run hotter? I'm thinking of getting the 250GB 5200RPM - is that a wise choice?

UK tech specs page (above link) has not yet been updated (still black background) so that should be fine.

But the UK store is updated and still shows 128/256 instead of 256/512. I imagine this is a typo and will be fixed. (C'mon Apple, don't do the dirty on us)!

I have the 7200 rpm, 200gig in my 17" 2.6.

I had a 5400 rpm in my last gen 15"

The 7200 RPM is a lot snappier for sure.

I have no idea how it affects the battery, would guess it costs a few minutes, but I am not really big on needing long battery life. Speed is important to me as I use the MBP for sales presentations.
