Next MacBook and MacBook Pro Updates in June?

DailyTech reports that Intel is planning to replace the Santa Rosa mobile platform with Montevina this June. More specifically, they claim that Apple will be revising their notebooks again this June to incorporate newest chipsets:
Quote:
Apple insiders confirmed the company will refresh its notebook lineups in June, which comes as no surprise since all Centrino partners indicated they will announce notebooks based on the new Montevina Centrino 2.
Alongside the platform refresh will be new Penryn processors with faster front-side buses (1066MHz) than the current revisions.

Menawhile, Digitimes details Intel's aggressive timetable with plans for Santa Rosa (Merom) to drop from 60% of shipments in the 1st quarter to 35% of shipments in 2nd quarter. Even the just released Santa Rosa (Penryn) is expected to be phased out by year's end to make room for Montevina.

Indeed, we had heard that Apple's introduction of Penryn-based MacBooks ahead of their usual product cycle was due to Intel's planned phase out of the older chips.

I Will Wait

Went by the Apple Store yesterday. New MB Pro's in inventory, but not out on the floor. All-in-all, a nice upgrade.

I will wait for Montevina before making the next upgrade if June looks like the date (even August).

MP Pro Gen 1 ~ 1.8 Mhz

Is the Montevina chip a big enough step forward to merit a case redesign in the Macbook Pros?

I think this is good. Im glad that I have my SR MBP from last August. Hopefully they will update the MBP's with Montevina in the summer, probably with better options such as a better Vid Card and Higher Res Screen.

this isn't news.

'Hey there is a computer and it will be updated in the future!!! What a concept!'

Obviously it will be updated. Is it really worth posting right now?

Welcome to he PC World Apple

Yeah I know, that was outright blasphemy on my part. With Intel running the show now, Apple will be updating more often which will lead to more people complaining they got shafted on the previous version. The days of rare PowerPC updates are over. This will probably drive the longevity price of an Apple computer down over time but of course Apple will never do price cuts. Since I just ordered my new MacBook Pro, I can't wait to see what happens in another 4 years

So does this mean the notebook forums will be saturated with 'should I buy now or wait?' threads for the next 4 months?

Of course it's obvious - and of course it's worth posting about!

Obviously there's going to be an election coming up, but yeah... I'd like to hear about that too!

And in more relevant news, i bought a penryn macbook pro yesterday - will upgrade to the gen2 of their redesign, whenever it may come!

I Think so. I mean, Montevina is just the "Code name" for the Platform which incorporates a New Chipset (Northbridge) which allows for Faster Front-Side Bus 1066MHz vice the 800Mhz that the Santa Rosa Platform utilizes. Also, Montevina allows for use of DDR3 800Mhz vice DDR2 667MHz. Lastly, Montevina uses PCI express 2.0 Spec, vie PCI express 1.0 Spec. Really, its not much of a difference but allows for better power management and Higher bandwidth to devices such as Video Cards, Sound Cards etc.

Overall it should be a nice upgrade. This platform will still use the Intel Core 2 Duo (Penryn) but with a faster FSB of 1066MHz.

Intel seems to be pushing its new processors and platforms to vendors.

What I'm interested in is the Mac Mini will get updated soon. I'm sure the iMac will get updated in the next month or two. But how long will the Mini run that processor.

For everyone who planned on buying a new MacBook Pro before they head off to college, this is valuable information.

I think we can relax a little regarding when or whether Apple will upgrade their notebooks inline with new technology releases.

Basically it's pretty clear Intel are calling the shots by introducing new lines and phasing out old ones.

You can't really avoid upgrading if Intel aren't making your CPU or chipset line any more.

As consumers we can't lose in the short term although it would be nice if AMD could get their act together. One of the reasons we are seeing such a fast release timetable is because of AMD stepping on Intel's toes over the last five years.

Great. Another wait. Another excuse why I should not buy MacBook Pro just yet. Just waiting for my bank balance to increase with interest that I gonna save...

Are you kidding me? The forums are ALWAYS saturated with "Should I buy now or wait?" threads not to mention "Glossy or matte screen?" and who can forget the classic "MacBook or MacBook Pro?". If these people had just performed a simple search before posting a new thread then they would've found all the answers they ever wanted.

Cliff3, I'm sorry to say but you're just gonna have to get used to it what with Montevina and Nehalem on the not too distant horizon. The sad thing is that for some people they will FOREVER be waiting for the next product revision and will end up buying nothing.

They DID do a case re-design. They called it the Macbook Air.

Oh, you want a DVD burner? You want firewire? Ok, you want a faster hard drive? Got it.

Oops, now we're back up to Macbook Pro size. Sorry!

The processor isn't the problem these days. The Macbooks (and pros) are about as small and sleek as you can get without removing components. And that's what they did with the Air. Don't expect them to start taking stuff out of their other laptops.

Unless you're not talking about shape, but just the look. What do you want? Fins? A purple stripe? Seriously, what? I see a millions "case re-design!" posts and not ONE of them ever makes a suggestion as to what they'd actually want.

Personally, I think your answer is right here:

http://www.google.com/search?sourcei...book%2c+laser#

There. Go for it.
