Penryn iMacs Next Tuesday?

MacNotes.de received unconfirmed word that new Penryn based iMacs would be seen next Tuesday, continuing Apple's pattern of weekly announcements since Macworld.

There's been no independant confirmation of such an announcement, but would be consistent with rumors that Apple is transitioning their Merom processor based Macs over to Penryn due to a planned phase out of Merom processors in the coming months.

I'll buy one for my office coworker who just threw out his IBM. Although it will probably only bump the processor and maybe the RAM. Nothing too special, but an update still.

That would be too fast! Hardly enough time to let the MacBook and MBP absorb the limelight.

Please don't complain when they don't upgrade the video card.

Then again it is on a MXM card.

It only makes sense, given the talk about Intel wanting to phase out the Meroms in favor of the Penryns. I'm looking to get an iMac soon, so this would be really nice.

Would be nice if they introduced a matte screen option with the update... but I'm not holding my breath.

Wow! What is going on? I've never seen so many Apple updates in such a small space of time. Talk about a complete contrast to pre-Intel days. It's an exciting time to be an Apple fan ...

more likely it will stick with merom but get the SR chipset. They love to keep the mini crippled, for some reason.

Wow I have never seen so many updates from Apple at one time. I'm just glad they updated the MacBook Pro. But having an iMac update won't be bad at all.

I thought Intel won't be supplying Meroms anymore...

How about it comes with a new keyboard with built in multi touch trackpad, no more less than mighty "mighty mouse" now that I would buy.

I think the implication was Intel would be aggressively ramping down production of the Merom rather than eliminating it altogether.

It seems a theme is emerging. The Intel/Apple relationship is such that Intel can push Apple to more aggressively adopt their new processors. I firmly believe this same 'weekly update' behavior will occur after WWDC; Montevina across the board every week for a month.

They'll make enough for warranty type work.

I don't think they were too pleased with how long Apple held on to the socket-M Core/Core2 Duos or the Woodcrest Mac Pros.

The Alu iMacs do have MXM cards. Seen the innards with my own eyes. The cards are screwed onto the motherboard.

I was thinking of buying a portable, but it seems like a new iMac would be even better for me, as I am not travelling THAT much for professional reasons nowadays...

However, I would need some advice from you guys: what to do with my wonderfully reliable iMac G5 afterwards? Any ideas?

If this is true, I may be sad for a few seconds since I've had my iMac for a just over a week. But oh well, not too much of a difference. I'm happy with what I have and updates are inevitable.
