you could also try fsck -y. file system check.
reboot and hold the 's' key, that takes you into single user mode. then type fsck -y and let it do it's thing. if it makes repairs, reboot again by typing reboot then continue with normal startup.
if there's no repairs, you can exit and continue with normal startup by typing either reboot or i think you can type bye as well. 😛
other than that hopefully Panther will fix your weirdness. you're doing a clean install, right?
