Live Coverage of iPhone SDK Roadmap Event

Apple is hosting a media event today to outline the iPhone Software Development Kit (SDK) and "some exciting new enterprise features". There have been a collection of rumors suggesting that Apple may not be able to deliver the final SDK immediately. That hasn't stopped a number of companies, such as reQall (memory aid), Six Apart (blogging software), and Freeverse (sports games), from announcing their intentions to write iPhone native applications with the new SDK. Meanwhile MySpace and SlingMedia have been rumored to be early recipients of the unreleased development kit.

Live Coverage

The event kicks off today at 10am Pacific, 1pm Eastern. A running countdown is provided at the top of MacRumors.com. MacRumors is unable to provide live coverage, but will be offering SMS updates for those unable to watch live coverage. Live coverage is being provided by a number of sites (in no particular order):

GadgetLab, CNet, Arstechnica, Gizmodo, Engadget, PhoneMag, CrunchGear, Macworld, Fortune

Updates

We will also be providing consolidated updates at the end of this article as the event unfolds.

Let's get as much enterprise support as possible so my employer will support (and pay for) iPhones!

how many SMS messages are sent out? Is it one large one, 1/minute, or is it random? I just don't want my phone beeping/vibrating 100 times. I'll be in a meeting at the time, but I always like to know what's going on.

It depends on the event. I'd guess anywhere from 5-15 would be the range depending on the length of the event. prob closer to the low end.

I have email confirmation from Sling Media that they ARE in fact developing an app for the iPhone and that they received the SDK prior to November. This should not be surprising as Googles had it since before the release of the iPhone so that they could taylor thier YouTube and Google Maps services.

Yeah I am just wondering how big of a deal this really is.

I guess its just me being skeptical because it seems inevidable that this event won't produce an SDK or apps.

I don't remember where I read it, but I'm pretty sure that Apple developed the YouTube and Google Maps application. They would have needed Google's APIs, not the other way around.

I don't know why, but I've never really looked into sling media before. Now that I have, if they do create an app for the iPhone, better buy will be getting $200 from me as soon as the app is available.

The Slingbox is by far the coolest thing ever invented....ok...except for maybe the iPhone. I absolutely LOVE my slingbox...and cannot wait for this app.

Well perhaps that was a bit premature? This points to being a Beta release of the SDK…*the actual apps may take a while to catch up.

If you're not a developer the release of the SDK won't change anything for you.

If this is beta I'm guessing it'll be released to ADC Select members like other betas.. so if you want it early it's a $500 cost to sign up, otherwise wait until release date.
