Sigh. Despite them adding a ton of features, releasing the SDK beta, and potentially launching the beginning of a significant advancement in the future trends of technology and computing, someone always has to nitpick. Yes, MMS would be great, and yes a ton of phones have it, but this isn't just about building the best phone. It's about creating the framework for a new computing platform that could affect the future for decades to come.

If you can view the PowerPoint presentations with the video out, that would make for some killer presentations. Just whip out your iPhone, connect the cable, and let the audience stare in awe.

MMS is old-school - and only necessary for communicating with people with "old" phones. Who wants to be limited to tiny low-res pictures that display differently both on different phones, and across different networks?!
Apple is looking to the future, and by omitting MMS, is encouraging us to use a less proprietary, and much more flexible, feature- and media-rich system for sending pictures on the move (and movies, when it happens) - email :-) The question is not "when will Apple include MMS in the iPhone" - I doubt that will ever happen. They omitted it for a reason. The question is more like "when will the rest of the world catch up". Yes, they may be a bit premature, but think floppy. Just my opinion.

Yes, there are other features that would be great on the iPhone, but you mentioned MMS, and I'm just responding to that. The lack of GPS and 3G is barely comparable to the lack of MMS - Apple will have its own DIFFERENT reasons for omitting each of them. As neven says, MMS is dead, or at least it should be

MMS is still relevant
As long as a majority of other phones still have and use MMS, it will remain a relevant complaint of iPhone owners. It is probably my #1 complaint. Why? Because everyone else I know have phones that support it and they use it. Instead of feeling like I have a superior phone, I'm left with a feeling of, "Look at what all I can do with my phone!" I say. To which my friends say, "Yeah, but can I send you pic?" "Well, um, no, not really." "Some phone." Like it or not, MMS does still play a role. Call it outdated all you want, but it is still used. Apple's omission of it is glaring, and quite frankly, haven't provided a good enough excuse why they don't. If it is not included in June, I may have to consider my phone choice.

Lack of MMS and video are still dealbreakers for me. I don't consider myself a nitpicker because I still REALLY REALLY REALLY lust after the iPhone, I just can't bring myself to do it because I know I would miss those.
Regarding MMS... As long as I use it at least once a week, and none of my friends have an iPhone or anything capable of receiving emails (the only other way to send photos using the iPhone), it's not a "dead" technology to me. The lack of video is just plain dumb to me. You can't even lean on the "dead technology" argument for this one. |

MMS already exists while video record and real GPS exist in prototype form for jailbroken iphones. The GPS guys for one (http://www.gomite.com/faq.html) have already said they were waiting for the SDK to put out a legit version. I'm sure somebody will do legit versions of MMS & video record just as soon as 2.0 is out. Last edited by X38; Mar 7, 2008 at 12:23 AM. Reason: dropped sentence |
