That link didn't work for me. But there's this instead:

http://www.apple.com/support/downloa...areupdate.html

[EDIT] Your link is now working for me.

Not sure whether to download it. I've had zero freezes and
the like so far.

[EDIT] ps Yes it is surprising there have been few posts about this.
After all the hoo-ha, barely a whisper when a potential fix actually
appears. Maybe it's the wrong time of day or maybe they've all
got 8800s by now

So what did it do?

My assessment is that is downgrades its power even more.

I downloaded the update and upon launching it, I was told I did not need it.

Perhaps it's because I'm running on a 2006 Mac Pro...

Now I'm wondering....

I have not been having any problems on my machine, I wonder if I should install this or not. It shouldn't hurt it....right?

Can anyone confirm or deny that it's slowing down the video card?

Heh, I did!

I just sold my HD2600XT on eBay yesterday evening.
I flashed one of the PC 8800GT's with Mac firmware and it works great. Even runs at an overclocked speed since I flashed those parameters into it as well.

For what it's worth though, I didn't have a single problem with my 2600 card while I was using it, BUT I was also using it in a dual display configuration. As I understood things, dual-monitor users weren't having problems with it anyway. The firmware fix was supposed to address issues people only had when using it with 1 display.

My Mac Pro is much quieter after the update. Anyone else experiencing this? Fans fire up longer at boot, but now all I hear is my drives.

This update isn't going to reduce performance, right?

Hmm... I don't see why that would be so unless the graphics card
fan speed has been changed. I wonder.

Well, I can tell you that it is MUCH quieter. Hear almost no fan noise now. The Mac Pro is now putting out about the same noise as the satellite box.

The 2600 XT firmware update is here!

System profiler now shows:
Chipset Model: ATI Radeon HD 2600

PCIe Lane Width: x16
VRAM (Total): 256 MB
Vendor: ATI (0x1002)

Yeah, I heard that it actually removes a RAM slot too.

I'm running a 2007 Mac Pro that I added a 2600 XT to...I guess I'd have the same issue as you if I were to download this. I have had a few strange crashes, though...

The updater doesn't run on gen. 1 Mac Pros even though the Radeon HD 2600XT card does. So, can't update my card, though I haven't had any stability problems either.

I'd heard that the earlier driver from Apple handled some graphic inputs in a non-standard way that conflicted with some 3D graphic sites and this was to fix that.

from what the link says, it sounds like this doesn't have anything to do with the reboot from sleep issue......

Has anyone else been having the "sitting on a blue screen for 5 minutes after the gray screen" after restart issue, and if so, does this do anything to fix that?

To be honest, after going through 2 brand new mac pros and updating to 10.5.2 and getting that problem, I'm afraid to try anything new.
