Ok.

So here goes my story. I jailbroke my iPhone in late February, when it was still complicated, having to put the device in restore mode, downgrading, jailbreaking, upgrading, iNdependence, etc.

It worked fine and everything, UNTIL the device took a slight fall. After that sound was crackly, phone speaker would not work (NOT speakerphone) AND the Home button stopped functioning.

I thought it would be a no brainer, all the device needed was a full restore to original Apple firmware 1.1.4 (?) and it would be up and running or at least in a state that would allow me to return it to Apple.

To my surprise, I was unable to restore because iTunes does not load the iPhone, neither does iNdependence or ijailbreak app. NOTHING.

I don't care about the hardware malfunctions (I suspect the Home button is somehow "jammed"), all I need to do is slap on an orginal firmware and go to the Apple store and get my iPhone repalced.

Please help me in restoring my iPhone before I commit iPhone-harakiri, I've already ordered a case-opener tool...

Thanks.

If you are having the issue of the iPhone only popping up as a digital camera when connected to your computer, but not showing in iTunes, I was having the same problem until a short while ago, and I just got the issue resolved. I've done my best to document the steps I took to remedy it, so have a go at it.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm using Windows XP Pro-

First, ensure that you have iTUnes 7.5 Installed. I recommend this version, since 7.6.1 is what caused this problem for me in the first place.
If you need to uninstall a newer version, do so by opening the control panel and use the "Add/Remove Programs" utility.

1- You must right-click on "My Computer" and select "Manage
2- In the left pane, select "Device Manager"
3- In the right window, expand "Imaging devices" or similar imaging category
4- You should see "Apple Camera" or something similar
5- Right click on the "Apple camera" and select "Update Driver"
6- Select second option "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)" click Next
7- Check the box labeled "Include this location in the search
8- Copy and paste this path into the folder line- C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers
9- Click "Next"

Windows should now locate the necessary USBAAPL driver to run the iPhone and enable it's detection in iTunes.

If this does not work, open your windows explorer, and use the search option at the top of the window. Search for "Usbaapl". This should turn up the location of the driver files you need to reassociate the iPhone with iTunes. Make a note of the directory, and use that in the Driver Update (step 8 above). My drivers happened to be in the C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers folder.

I hope this gets some of you back to working /syncing order.

Hey arch,

this is exactly the problem im having!

I uninstalled the latest version of itunes and installed version 7.5. However, when i try to start it up it says...

"The file 'iTunes Library.itl' cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes"

then it only lets me click okay and nothing happens.

Do you know how i can fix this?

There is an easy fix for that problem.
First, Close iTunes if it is open (although I doubt that is the case since that is your current problem :)

Just browse to "My Documents/ My Music/ iTunes"
(or C:\Documents and Settings\**your user name**\My Documents\My Music\iTunes)
and locate the iTunesLibrary.itl file.
You can either delete it, or, as I like to do, rename it to "iTunes Library 2008-03-23.itl" (today's date), and move it into the "Previous iTunes Libraries" folder located in the same folder.

With that file now deleted, or renamed, iTunes will create a new "iTunes Library.itl" file taht is compatible with whatever version you are running the next time you launch iTunes.

You should be good to go after that :apple:

Okay giving that a shot now :) If I can actually get music and everything going on this iphone I will be so happy!

I followed your instructions and once I got to device manager I could not find anything resembling "imaging devices". I looked under every category..... i am moving to the next step you said

Okay I went to your second piece of info. I located the drivers folder and I see the usbaapl file inside of it.

What exactly do I do now? I searched usbaapl in the search menu and it brought up a bunch of options in google... am i looking to update this specific driver and if so how do I do that?

When you connect your iPhone to your computer, is it recognized AT ALL?
As I stated initially, this will only work for people who are having the issue of the iPhone being detected by your computer, and most likely the picture manager (or iPhoto on Macs) pops up to let you copy any pictures stored on your phone.
If you are not getting the audible "DeeDum" to let you know the PC has detected the iPhone, there is a problem with your iPhone's hardware.

You should, at the very least, be able to transfer photos from the phone.

All I can suggest is to expand every category in your Device manager. You may have luck at the bottom in the USB section. You may see "USB Mass Storage Device". The iPhone sometimes shows up as that as well.
If you do find "USB Mass Storage Device", right click on it, and select "Update Driver" then follow the intructions from there.

Ultimately, you have to find the iPhone, regardless of what your PC is detecting it as (Apple Camera. Digital Camera, Mass Storage Device etc...) in order to update its drivers.

Well I figured out a solution. My c:\ is very congested so I have been saving everything to my d:\... I uninstalled and just downloaded to the default directory and it works now.

Thanks for your help arch, if you can check out my new thread about the syncing problem i am having that would be great.

cheers

ARCHA1C, thank you for your response. Unfortunately, I'm using a Mac OS 10.5 and my computer does NOT recognize my iPhone at all. It's as if nothing is connected.

The iPhone DOES get a charge from the USB cable, BUT the icon on the iPhone does not change to the lightning bolt to show that it is charging.

Any ideas???

Please let me know.

Thanks.

Could you tell me what exactly do u mean by that ? Since i am too not able to see any lighting bolt when connected to my computer. and i am not at all able to recognizing the iphone at all.

Please help me.

he just stated that independence does NOT recognise his iphone.
he was the thread starter and therefore read his original post (as he said) his problem is much more serious than that in that it can not be found by ANYTHING on his computer.

so am i right in assuming that the home button is jammed... but NOT jammed in? (cant get it in recovery mode?)

thanks for the clarification.

I am not aware of the independance stuff.

Well can u also help me with the issue i have with my iphone.

I am not able to detect my iphone in windows, or in iTunes. Simply nothing is happening when i plug the cable to windows or linux system. (I do not have Mac System). Hene now i am not able to charge my iPhone or sync song or do any kind of stuff. I had the cracked the phone using ziphone (do it all option) and it was working fine, i was able to use all the feature, right from providing the proxy to safari browser.

then suddenly one day when i connect to the system, nothing is happening?

Please help me.

Zmit,

You seem to be grasping my exact problem.

I'm not able to get the iPhone into recovery mode because the Home button is not responding to anything (correct, jammed, but NOT jammed in). (i.e. if you open an app on the Home Screen, the only way to "quit" that app and get back to the Home Screen, is to power the iPhone off and then on again).

When I plug in the USB cable, there is no sound feedback that confirms the phone is connected AND, although the battery indicator does not change to the lightning bolt icon that indicates the iPhone is charging, it DOES get a charge. Wierd.

I've tried using iNdependence and the other similar app (its name slips my mind now) but, I can't get anything to load/recognize/talk to the iPhone.

I assume, since the Home button is busted, I can take it back to the Apple Store to get it fixed BUT, not with Installer App installed.

All I want to do is reset my iPhone to the original Apple firmware (or uninstall Installer App) so I can take iPhone back to mothership for repairs.

Any ideas anybody? Please help.

Your issues are bigger than mine but I'll share my experience anyway.
For some unknown reason my iPhone was not being recognized in iTunes (even thought my iPod was). I re installed iTunes and poof . . . . there was my iPhone ;)

AJsAWiz,

Thank you for the tip. I tried doing that, even installing earlier versions of iTunes, tried different USB cables, different computers (PC's and Mac's), etc.

I'm afraid it's not going to be so easy to solve. Thank you though.

Help Please

I jailbroke my iPhone 3G running 2.2.1 Firmware using QuickPwn 2.2.5-2 for Windows (I have a PC running Windows Vista Premium). The jailbreak worked and everything was great except that I could no longer sync my photos. iTunes gave me an error stating the file could not be found. I wasn't too concerned with my photos and was more interested in customizing my iPhone and seeing what all I could do that I didn't know with it being jailbroken. Well, after about a week, maybe two, iTunes will no longer recognize my iPhone. My laptop will charge my iPhone and will allow me to sync my photos from my iPhone TO my PC using Windows Auto-Play, but nothing more. iTunes will not recognize my iPhone AT ALL. I've tried restarting my PC, rebooting my iPhone, have tried uninstalling iTunes and downloading and installing an older version of iTunes, have tried putting my iPhone in DFU mode with no connection to even restore, have tried downloading and copying the usbaapl.sys driver and copying it into the C:\Windows\System32\drivers folder and doing a restart, also tried copying it into the C:\Windows\inf folder and a restart both with no success, have tried doing a driver update in Device Manager, all with no success and have run out of ideas and I can't find anything online to help me. What can I do? Please help!?!?

ITunes detection of Iphone and Restoring. Issue Fixed!!!!

Like most of you my IPhone locked on the Apple logo screen at boot up nor could I restore it. I tried many methods and programs that didn’t work for me. However, I have found the solution.
1) Click on Start / Control panel / add or remove programs
2) Check that Apple Mobile Device Support is in the list of programs
3) Click on Administrative Tools
4) Click on Services
5) In the right hand window look for Apple Mobile Device Support
6) In the top left of the window click on stop then click on start
7) Restart ITunes

This time ITunes should identify your phone. At this point, you should be able to restore your phone but be warned you may still get error messages. If you do, then follow these steps.

1) After ITunes has told you the phone cannot be restored click on ok. Leave the phone as it is whether the screen is black or white and close ITunes.
2) Restart ITunes and allow it to identify your phone.
3) Follow the restore process again

This time it should restore at least that’s what worked for me. Hope this helps.

Ok I got one for ya Arch

As it stand I just got iPhone 4s 16gb.. I've read tons of stories about how push notifications eating away at battery life.. So I find a site with some ideas to fix this and the one I followed led my to modify the push notification plist file. As the instructions went I change the name of the file by adding a "%" symbol to the end of the name, no mods where applied to any of that file "(I.e. code, letters, words ect) well now I cannot connect to The phone with anything ( ifile, winscp, ifunbox, ) I cannot say into it whatsoever nor can I connect it to iTunes although I did manage to use a USB program to turn a portion of the phones disk space to act as a thumb drive to store pc os images and such. I'm running win 7 64 bit ultra. When I plug it in the computer reads it as a thumb drive asking If I want to view file or speed up my computer. Yet I can't ash into it at all nor will iTunes recognize it at all uses in dfu mode have you ran across anything like this?
