I am trying to set the size of new Finder windows. According to Help there should be an option to apply the size either to a particular window or to all windows. In Finder>View>Show View Options I only have 3 options - text sixe, show icon and show preview column. Am I missing something obvious here?

Yup, you're making it too hard. To change the size of all new finder windows simply open a new finder window size it to the size you want and then close it. All new finder windows will be opened at the same size.
