you cant install the Parallels application on an external hard drive but you can install the virtual machine directory.
to do this close Parallels and move the Parallels folder in your Documents folder to your external drive by clicking and dragging while holding "command". then open Parallels' Preferences and change the "Default folder for virtual machines" to the Parallels folder on your external drive.
If you can't innovate, you just imitate, but it's never quite as good as the original.
