According to preliminary data from NPD, Apple reportedly achieved 14 percent of the U.S. retail PC market share in February 2008, up from 9% just a year ago. This represents 60 percent unit growth and 67 percent revenue growth year-over-year.

Mac Notebook sales were up 64% year-over-year and Mac Desktops up 55% year-over-year, with strong sales of the MacBook Air this February.

Unfortunately, historic NPD data is not publicly available. Previous reports of Apple marketshare have been gathered with very different methods so are not directly comparable. The trend, however, is consistent with reports of Apple's growing popularity.

In 2001, Apple launched their retail store initiative with the slogan "5% down, 95% to go", referring to market share.

So not to be confused this does mean 14% TOTAL Market right?
There are so many percentage figures out there that usually only talk about growth over previous years.

Wow if this is total market share. The wave of momentum is HUGE right now for Apple.

Yeah, I think it just means 14% of all PCs sold (probably in the US) were Apple. Nice.
 
Keep it coming. The fact that people are buying in the face of a (real or perceived) recession is impressive. The computer seems to be right up there as being just as indispensable as a car or a TV. If it breaks, you find a way to repair or get a new one, despite the difficulty in affording one. It's a "must-have." Go :apple:!
 
When they say "PC," do they mean just desktop computers? Because I'd imagine that Apple's share of sold notebooks must be much higher. Seems like everyone has a MacBook these days.

Statistic includes both desktops and notebooks.

No they don't just mean desktops.
 
Congrats Apple. Well deserved. I like to think I had a microscopic part in this. When I was selling PCs at BB, I would tell people about Apples even though we only sold them online at the time. I would tell about the Apple store up the street so they could check them out. Most didn't know it was there.

After we got our Apple display last August some of those people came back and bought Macs from me because they appreciated the fact that I didn't just try to sell them something in the store. I could tell right away from the sales floor that Apple was going to make huge stride in market share. :apple:

But it is cool, i'm feeling a little 'less special' with this sort of news though...especially since Chris Moyles has a mac.
 
HAHA. WOW. I just re-read the headline. At first I thought it meant that, of all the computers bought in this time period, 14% were Apple products. Now I understand what this was actually saying. Double digits FTW!
 
The new growth driver

No surprise here. I was concerned about recession issues, but it appears two factors are at work. One, the relative price insensitivity of a typical Mac buyer. And two, a flight to quality goods. By that I mean that as money tightens, people will buy fewer items but of higher quality. The Mac reputation for reliability and longevity will serve it well.

On a side note, so when is the Steve Ballmer deathwatch going to kick in? I predict it will be in full force when and if Apple hits >20% market share in computers and the iPhone gets full corporate IT support. In other words about 1.5 years.

this seems to include both Notebooks and Desktops.

And this presumably means of all computers sold in the U.S. at retail locations in 2008, 14% of them were Apple computers. So online sales not included.

It says nothing about total installed marketshare.

It is as simple as people trying Mac OS X and discovering that it is much better than the awkward and anti-intuitive Windows. Once you know the Mac, you do not want Windows even for free!

No. Back in the early 90's Apple went for market share with lines like the Performa. I believe it was a high as 30-35%. Of course, the strategy of market share above all else also almost bankrupted the company.

Oh, and before that, the Apple II line was dominant, afaik with 50%+ market share.

It is US-based retail sales in the month of February. Think of who is NOT in the picture -- Dell. Add in that factor, and it gives a very different perspective on marketshare.
