Various news outlets are reporting on upcoming Powerbook revisions.
The Register claims the new Titanium G4's will run at 600 and 700mhz:

Our source tells us the new PowerBooks are likely to appear towards the end of this month.

Of more interest is their speculation that "big" revisions will be expected at MacWorld Tokyo:

the new chip is simply being used to speed-bump the PowerBook before completely new models - described as a "big revision" - are launched next year at Macworld Expo Tokyo, the traditional venue of Apple's PowerBook announcements.

any details on the video chip?

I'm interested in getting a Powerbook G4 but I've held off because of the rumors of a new powerbook.

Anyone know if a the new pb G4 will have an updated video chip?

Strange - there's no mentioning anywhere of an upcoming MacWorld Tokyo, and normally it's a couple of weeks after the hoopla in San Francisco. So I wonder, too !

13.4W (typical) at 700MHz <--- This is to much for a laptop and even more for the "one-inch-thick" Powerbook!
The powerbook has already minor energy/power problems and I wonder how will Apple cope with this...

Anyway.. the introduction of 133 bus can esily mean an AGPX4 bus and thus the Mobility Radeon 7500 in it's full use. This new Powerbook should have a great graphics performance...

I am looking forward for the new powerbook since this will probably be my 1st MAC computer...

yeah.. i have been waiting for a new powerbook to become avaiable too... I have been wanting to go mac for a while, and now that i have a need for a notebook, this is the perfect way. I am about to sell my pc to get the mac, so the timing is pretty good. Course, i will probably have a few weeks without a pc. I may be forced to go outside. Course, with a laptop and airport, i plan on doing that more anyway. :)

Macworld Tokyo March 21-23

from MacNN:

Lynn Fredricks that Apple and IDG have rescheduled Macworld Tokyo 2002 from its traditional February date to late March (21st-23rd) and its location to the Tokyo Big Site convention center, which he says could be detrimental for the conference because of "much higher" air/ground transportation and hotels costs due to Spring Break travel:

"Those of you who frequent the floor and sit down with local vendors know that over the last few years, the number of local vendors and distributors have lessened or cut back on their presense. MacWorld Tokyo's attendance numbers have not only lost "headcount" but also the type of "head" has changed from the Macintosh professional to those who visit because they got tickets for free or cheap and need to burn off a Saturday afternoon (Ever see those guys selling tickets down by the subway station?). Rather than improve the image of the show, IDG Japan, and I assume Apple Japan, have elected to make matters worse."

The "estimated shipping time" for ibooks and powerboooks has gone from 1 day across the board to 4 days for consumers and 8 days for educational institutions. Could this be a sign if an imminent update?

heres a question. what odds do you guys give of the following on the new powerbook :

standard 256 ram ?

base model of over(not including) 500 mHz ?

combo slot loading ?

BACKLIT KEYBOARDS ?

Damn I need to get a life and stop checking this website. Anyway, here goes:

Standard 256: 60%
Base model over 500: 70% (only because ALL the rumors sites, except MOSR which sucks anyway, seem to agree on this)
Combo: 80% (at least as an option)
Backlit keyboards: 10%
Bus speed: 60%

To be honest, I am pretty weirded out by the rumors. I am fairly shocked that they would put a 7440 in a TiBook, especially given how bloody hot the current 7410s are. If they have found a way to do it, great -- I'd LOVE the faster bus and speeds. But I'm just not optimistic that the rumor mill has it right.

What I want the most is the ATI RADEON Mobility chipset. That's the one thing that kept me waiting on a revision. I was only getting 30 fps on a lot of my games, and that just wasn't cutting it. :)

Yes, I know...I should have bought a PlayStation.

faster PB

at 600 or 700 MHz with a G4 chip, the Titanium will take more powerusers away from the Wintel laptop world

Apple availability figures.

My order for a new powerbook placed over two and half weeks ago was quietly ignored by Apple. No more powerbooks are going to be brought into my country. The best case scenario is an announcement of new powerbook models later this week.

I imagine lead time for immediate orders will be on the order of one to two weeks. So, there is (depending on exactly how uncharitable you are when you are counting) a trhee to five week gap when you cannot get a powerbook. If they were launched 8 or 9 months ago then you can actually buy an apple powerbook perhaps
80-90% of the time. (Assuming a continuance of simialr product cycles, it could be worse sooner if new models come out with MacWorld Tokyo)

This is rather depressing -- it's a pity one has to go to a single supplier market in order to get a machine as nice as a mac.

*sigh*

*sigh*

I'm doubtful of this nonsense.

The stupid article in the Register implies that 3 months from now, laptop processor speeds are going to double?

We're not even above 866 on desktops at the moment.

I'd say the story on Tokyo is completely bogus...I'm surprised no one has commented similarly on this. It just doesn't make sense to do a full revision (and yes, adding a new ATI card and bumping up the processor is a significant revision) and then do another "bigger" revision 3 months later.

Frankly, I don't know what people are bitching about. What more do you want on your laptop that you won't get on this one? The only thing I've heard is a higher res screen. Yeah, well, cry about it.

That's fair, unless they have something particulary exciting that can be thrown into the laptops at that point, there wouldn't be very much point at all. OF course, if the current revision doesn't quite get particulary nice processors and doesn't quite get nice combo drives and we have to put up with half-measures for a few months, then another update would make a certain amount of sense.

I'll discuss this when I see what's on this alleged new laptop. What I'm really not happy about at the moment is that we are in that 15% of the time where you can't get a damn powerbook at all, old or new model. As I have unfortunately coincided my need for a laptop with this time I think I'm understandably annoyed.

speeds to double?

i know speeds won't double but that would put any MHz myth to sleep

but you're right, the desktops first have to hit the 1 GHz mark so they won't have to answer stupid questions from wintel users...but the speed wars will continue now that intel has hit 2 GHz and AMD is on the way shortly

what i don't want to see is a wintel laptop hit 2 GHz before the titanium hits 1 GHz (wintels are already at 1.3 GHz) and this is one of the factors making the uneducated consumer buy wintel in both the desktop and laptop worlds

but after 2 GHz, does speed matter anymore?...maybe people will tire of that "statistic" and just look at important features like CD-RW, DVD, and firewire (IEEE 1394 iLink) ports

i mean when is the last time one cared if their phone was a "better" 2.4 GHz phone vs. a 900 MHz phone? (once a huge selling point a year and a half ago when i was a phone salesman)

The powerbook will always be the best laptop because in laptops a major selling point is style and that is what a Tibook has.
Alot of laptop users see their laptop as a fashion statement, they show it off alot. Unlike desktops where style isnt considered as important.
The TiBook is a lean sleek sexy beast, almost sensual to the touch. It is light, thin and is practically a sex toy compared to the lardass fat clunky sony vaios, fujitsu blah whatever.
But yes the TiBook does need a speed increase.

People are becoming satisfied with the machine they have, it does everything they want it to do. So i dont think people are as interested in a faster machine as they used to be. As PCs get faster what you will see is they will do much more, like close curtains and defragment a porno collection. Otherwise no-one is going to need them or buy them.

What are you talking about? 2GHZ is nothing. Once we hit 2, Microbloat will come out will Office with a 4 gig install that almost writes for you..... Maybe when we hit exahertz....

picked up new iBook at the Apple Store today

hi folks,

i picked up a new iBook at the tyson's corner, va apple store today. i was excited to be the first one to buy one (at least at that store).

first impressions indicate that the system seems somewhat faster (i should run some tests comparing the two); the track pad appears to have a nicer feel to it - more coarse; the ac adapter has been updated - i'm curious if i'll be able to use the old one with it; os x 10.1 and 9.2.1 pre-installed.

btw, they only have the combo-drive iBook configuration in stock. the folks at the apple store did not have an indication of when the others would arrive, only indicating that hopefully soon.

more information to follow later. btw, anyone have any suggestions for benchmarks to run on os x?

cheers!
yash
