Nano-No low volume with 5 earbuds - either super quiet or really loud...

There is no in between medium volume....anything I can do to change that so I don't go deaf?

This sounds like a partially broken cable or cracked solder joint to me -- it acts like a resistor until the voltage (volume) builds up high enough to bridge the gap. Warranty time. Don't know if it's the phones or the iPod though.
Ex = former, no longer. Spurt = a leak, esp. when caused by water pressure. Expert = a has-been drip under pressure.
