What upgrade do you want to buy? AFAIK, there is currently no official way to use AV Windows Live (MSN) Messenger on the Mac. Stuff like Mercury supports it, but there is no official way. If you want officially supported AV on Mac you either have to use iChat (which unfortunately is only with other Mac/iChat users or with AIM users - AIM is supposedly popular in some countries but I have never met a person to use it) or Skype (which is probably the best way right now - it works flawlessly cross-platform).

Adium is quite possibly the best and most customizable client I have ever used. If you want video download Mercury messenger. Adium is supposed to be getting AV support soon, and skype on the mac works very very well for AV. I have all the replacements of msn on the windows side and am very happy. As others have said Adium is amazing, give it a week or two and learn to use tabbed chat boxs and different skins.

Just to clarify, Adium is going to get video eventually, and almost certainly not "soon".

If you are used to, (or enjoy) using nudges and the like, you will have to use an application other than MSN for Mac.

Adium took some getting used to, but after finding a skin I liked, and just giving it a chance, I now enjoy it. When I am on my PC, I can no longer stand all the crap in the Windows version of MSN, (as if that wasn't obvious so far). I ended up installing Trillian on my PC because it's got a calmer, simpler interface, similar to Adium. I don't miss the other features at all.

Don't be too quick to uninstall Adium. Give it a week, and see if it grows on you. Good luck, whatever you decide, and congrats on the new Mac.
You can patch all that annoying and bloaty stuff out of windows live messenger, with mess patch from mess.be.

I just hate how the mac one doesnt auto reconnect, other than that give me audio/video and a share folder and it'd be perfect.

im using adium and this is my first osx machine. its pretty good. i think its the same compared to the msn that microsoft offers for download. i dont care for the nudge feature and all that crap because wen im mixing i dont want all those noises going off especially wen my monitors are loud.

I have connects with some really important people like family members... eg: I just reconnected with my younger brother who I haven't seen or talked with for 32yrs and he just loves webchatting. I don't really need any help making long distance calls, I need mac to mac/pc communication.

Adium is great. I would never think of using MSN on Leopard.

Well there ya go. See, I was under the apparently incorrect impression that the newer version of Yahoo! IM for mac had A/V features. *smacking forehead* and, therefore an OS upgrade would do the trick.

Gee if's fun displaying my ignorance here... Think I'd better just back out of this thread... forget grace... too late for that.

Thanks for the info and for taking the time.

But how to import contacts from Adium or hotmail is the real nut.

I've tried looking on the plugin area of the Adium site and I cannot see any plugins for Audio/Visual, do you have any links?

Also, most of my friend use MSN. How do you use custom emotions on Adium? All I seem to be able to do is save them and that's it. These are the reasons I keep using Mac:Messenger with its prehistoric features.

Skype does a wonderful job at allowing webchatting along with video. I have a son in Japan and a daughter in England. Son owns a MBP and my daughter a Dell PC. My wife and me both use Skype with Video from either my MBP or her E-Machine XP Machine with no problems. My Son has a ISDN Connection and my daughter DSL. We talk all the time with no cost going PC to PC or PC to Mac. One really nice thing is the ability to do conference calls with son and daughter both on. As long as daughter is not surfing the web at the same time do I have any sort of Lag. Skype also goes one step above in that I can call from my computer (Mac or Windoze) and call their home phone or cell for a small cost. Skype is a type of VOIP Service that costs for calling a home. But PC to PC is FREE. Also Skype is FREE unless you want to call to a home or cell phone then you need to add a couple of options that do cost. Otherwise its free.....

Bill......
