Woah, I logged in to post the EXACT same question.

Didn't reinstall anything but everytime I synch, contacts entered directly into my iPhone get deleted and overwritten by what's in the address book. V V annoying!

Simple.

Make sure that the iTunes option "Replace Info on this iPhone from Mac" is unchecked. Do a Sync and your computer and iPhone will merge. Got it?

Actually, sorry, I still don't see it.

I have my iphone plugged in (1.0.2 unlocked) and on the 'info' page under address book ... I see 'synch address book contacts' . But the option "put new contacts on this iphone into the group ... " is greyed out.

And the replace infomation IS unchecked.

Still, everytime I synch, I lose all contacts manually entered into my phone and they aren't in the address book.

i fixed this problem

there are 2 ways in which this can happen!
first way.

delete
library/preferances/adressbookme.plist

then open isync goto preferences and reset sync history.

(make sure address book and itunes are not open.

if this doesnt work

there is a known issue with leopard that for some strange reason shows this behavior with the first user account that is created.

to fix this create a new user account and sync with itunes. this is the route i had to take. took a while to set up the account the way i liked it but i have no more problems syncing.

hope this helps...

and sorry for not getting back sooner

Is there any way of backing up the contacts on the iphone BEFORE I try this aproach? I've added close to 50 contacts and if I lose them on synch, I'm screwed because those are the only records I have

Are you sure that's the name of the file? The closest I could find was ...

com.apple.addressbook.plist

Last Bump if anyone can help. I'm scared of trying something and having my phone contacts written over. There are too many new ones in there.

I'm starting to have these issues. I've tried several things, including these tips from The Entourage Help Page. Keeping up with my over 1,300 contacts is one of the most attractive features, and it's not working! Right now, the calendar is updated, but contacts are erased.

factory restore your iphone then resync but treat as a new phone (do not restore from a back- up sounds like the back-up is corrupt

Did you receive any further answers / help with this and were you finally able to sync contacts from your iPhone --> mac without wiping out the iPhone contacts? (or back-up the contacts on your iPhone b/f risking the sync?)

I'm facing the same problem and really don't want to wipe out 120 contacts on my iPhone, a few of which are the only record i have.

I phone 3GS contacts erased!

I recently synced and backed my phone up onto my mac. When everything was finished, everything looks good except all my contacts are gone. Can anyone help?
