As you probably know, Safari limits you to 4 simultaneous downloads and won't even load new pages while 4 things download. Is there a way around this (other than using another browser)?

Thanks!

I've never seen a limit on the max number of downloads...are you sure about the 4 download limit?

I've got the latest version of Safari for sure. I do a lot of large downloads from IGN.com and I am certain that every version of Safari I've used has had this limit. I'm using panther now, but this was true under jaguar and earlier versions of Safari.

Download limits are imposed by the webservers. Most are set to three, you can only d/l 3 threads from a web server. While you can have many downloads going from many sources. Some Browsers also build in a "single site" thread limit, with three being common Netiquette. If you are getting 4, consider yourself both lucky and uncouth.

I do consider myself lucky, though I am far from uncouth. I happen to be one of the most compassionate and considerate people you could ever hope to meet on this Earth. To me, uncouth is making a quick judgement like you just did based on insufficient information.

I happen to be a paying member of IGN.com - they have tons of new file downloads daily and expect lots of simultaneous downloads. That's what I pay for. Its also what game developers pay IGN for - everying I download is in effect an advertisement for a game I will likely buy. Uncouth? Through IE I can download as many as I wish, so it is not webserver imposed. Your information was as inaccurate as your message was graceless.

I guess I am a bit in shock to see this sort of flaming on a Mac forum. Is it always like this? To the others, I appreciate your help. I was simply hoping to do the downloading without leaving Safari.

I guess it's not exactly what you want, but you can ctrl-click on the ftp link in safari and copy-paste that link to download wizard. Download wizard also has the ability to pause and resume downloads, but I guess if you're on broadband this isn't important to you.

OK, I just tested this out on some big downloads and I am definitely seeing the 4 download limit, even across two servers.

It's definitely an odd handicapping and I hope one of the hack developers comes up with a fix.

I've looked around, but have yet to find a hack. Though it'd be really nice if Apple addressed it first.

Another reason this is problematic is that it really slows you down when opening a whole set of bookmarks simultaneously in tabs. For those of us managing websites, managing auctions, or monitoring the news, this can become an unnecessary performance killer.

another option: Mozilla Firebird, not IE and no limits!

(I know, it isn't Safari, but it's my personal pref....)

Considering MS hasn't had an update beyond a basic bug fix since 2001 or so and is not going to update it further, yes.

When it first came out it was way ahead of it's PC counterpart in terms of web standards compatibility and user features (e.g. text zoom). It's just showing it's age.

IE hasn't been updated for a long time and it seems to be falling behind on the PC as well.
Mozilla is good program for both, although I still prefer Safari on my Macs.
