3G iPhone Already Ordered By Apple?

Gartner analyst Ken Dulaney claims to have heard "from sources in Asia" that Apple has placed a 10 million unit order for 3G iPhones, according to an interview by the iPod Observer. This order for 10 million 3G iPhones would reportedly be above and beyond the original 10 million Apple had planned to sell of the initial version of the iPhone in 2008.

The analyst goes on to speculate that the 3G version could incorporate an OLED display which could improve battery life. Apple's use of OLED technology has long been rumored but has yet to come true.

This timeframe could be consistent with recent Page 2 rumors that the 3G iPhone would be coming "in a few months." Multiple reports have claimed that the 3G iPhone would be released in 2008.

Just what I'm waiting on. I have 3G on my current phone and I love 3G too much to get an iPhone.

3G + iPhone = Me - $400.

Well I'm finally just getting my refurbished iPhone tomorrow... How soon do you think these rumored 3G Phones will show up? June? Next fall?

I'll get a iPhone 2.0 when it finally comes to canada, but until then I'll enjoy mine unlocked.

Ahh please be true! Especially about the new displays, there is nothing like having a phone with good battery life.

I'm thinking they will most likely insert a 3G model as a high-end option and leave the current ones at a lower price. This also means no significant hardware revamps for this model (except obviously the 3G chip and the rumored OLED screens).

a phone with good battery life? I haven't seen one of these since the late 90s.

...and no whining

To anyone planning on whining that they paid a bunch of money for an EDGE iPhone and now 3G looks like it's coming... let me preemptively introduce you to the time value of money.

I really hope they offer some sort of iPhone G1 to G2 offer.

I wonder if these new devices have some sort of new look, that way Apple could have some sort of iPhone (current generation) and iPhone Pro (G2) going on at the same time. That would be pretty wise in case the new phones sell at higher prices. Then they could also take the iPhone G1 to G2 phones and sell those as Refurbs.

Anyways, it's a good thing that my birthday falls on May 31st

This totally smacks of a Page 2 rumor. 10 million iPhones? OLED display? The cost would be astronomical, and to order 10 million straight off the bat would be totally irresponsible and definitely un-Apple. G3? Sure. But the rest of it is crock.

I'm still waiting on Apple's OLED keyboard, damn the phone

seriously, I've been waiting on this too. Sometimes getting the first isn't always good, sometimes it's good for the tech to settle in cuz you KNOW Stevie is gonna up the size, shift the models, and the price.

Come on 3G OLED (and the OLED keyboard)

10 million iPhone on first order? unlikely.
It may be contract to manufacture 10 million iPhones.
But 3G is definitely coming this summer and
I'll buy one as soon as it's out.

Well you can wait forever, always in hopes of the next big thing around the corner...

...or you can man up and get the product and when it comes time to upgrade or replace you will have been happy the whole time.

I for one, am glad to have purchased the iPhone (right after price drop) and I would have been miserable sitting around with my old motorola reading forums month after month.

I agree. 10 million off the bat is like producing 10 million brand new never tested airplanes and expecting them all to work when needed.

Is it possible that iphone 2 got through the FCC approval without anyone knowing? How could apple order ANYTHING without that?

$399/16GB
$499/32GB???

Speculation
1. OLED to be only on the $499/32GB model?
2. Different color/design from first iPhone?
3. Bigger model to be a distinct tint/design?

No one mentioned the possibility of the OLED allowing for Apple to make the iPhone slimmer.

That would be cool.

This is all hard to believe and I will most likely just my iPhone in the next month or so when my Verizon contract expires.

I'm tired of my Motorola crap phone.

Was wondering this as well. I seem to remember Jobs saying phones had to be approved 6 months in advance by the FCC. Seems unlikely a new phone could sneak up on us.

Would a 3G iPhone plan be more expensive than the current EDGE iPhone plan?

The pricing of 32GB Flash and OLED makes a $500 pricepoint impossible, but I think that putting an OLED display in the higher capacity model would be a smart move.

I hope not. I'd rather use any additional space for a larger battery for more usable time.

The original iPhone was announced 6 months ahead of time, but the FCC doesn't need anywhere near that amount of time. Apple didn't even file for it for a couple months after it was announced. I believe that the 6 months duration was to prevent people from renewing their contracts with other carriers/phones.

I'd suspect if they are ordering 10Mill iPhones it's not all the be deliveried on the same day, sounds like a one year supply, to allow manufactures to lock in their supply contracts as well.

Contract of that would include a few samples for testing and q&a.
