Flickering Spotlight List

Does anyone else's Spotlight list flicker when typing into
the search field?

I didn't notice it before, but just applied the Leopard gfx
update and the EFI update and now I see it.

What happens is that the whole list disappears and then
reappears quickly, and this looks like flickering. It doesn't
flicker when I stop typing.

Also: I never applied the HD2600XT firmware update, and
do not wish to if I can avoid it.

Thanks.

Not in spotlight but I've definitely seen a flickering dialogue/menu box somewhere. Let me see if I can dig it up.

Mine is doing it too - flickers with parts of the desktop background in the drop down box.

I've applied all the latest patches.

Hi Chunk. When you say all, you include the HD2600XT firmware
update? I think you probably do, but I just want to doublecheck,
thanks.

It's a fairly trivial issue, I think, as long as it doesn't indicate some
deeper problem. I'm just curious about it.

My bad, I thought I had applied the 2600 fw update but it is still showing as available - I declined this time.

In another twist, spotlight has stopped doing the flickering thing since I left the machine powered off overnight.

Ok, I'll give it some time to right itself. The worst case would
be that the fw update wraps up some necessary tweaks with
some unnecessary ones - i.e., the increased fan speed.

No flickering here, I've applied all the updates.

I may try grabbing the old drivers off the Leopard
install disk to see if it disappears.

I maybe had my silly head on yesterday applying
these updates. After all, nothing was not working
before. But then I don't want to end up 6 months
from now with a huge list of ignored updates. It
feels great to be up-to-date for some odd reason.

Ok, I decided to reinstall without the update. I wanted to slim down
the system a little bit and get rid of unnecessary language support
etc. Only partially successful it seems as there's still a bunch of
Japanese fonts in some menus. Goodness knows how they got in
there.

Anyhow, without the Leopard graphics update the flickering has gone.
Hurrah, hooray and all that! Also, I am sure now that the menus were
flickering before. Now that I have a reference point, that is very clear.

Finally, it's not only this machine that had the flickering. I noticed it on
some other Mac Pros too. And, despite the MP boot ROM update being
supposedly dependent on the graphics update, there are no adverse
effects that I can see if that dependency is not installed.

Frankly, I'm getting to the point where I might never install an update
like this again. If it seems to work, and there are no security issues, I
may just let it pass in future. A flickering menu may seem like a small
issue. In many ways it is inconsequential. But it's like a little flea-sized
bug that's constantly there biting away and distracting you.
