I generally find that most of the time it doesn't matter what you say, they just aren't interested in listening.
You can slowly make them crack over a long peroid of time, though... esp. if you have a laptop that you can continually, subtly, show off how great your computer is without making it obvious that you are converting them

that...or I verbally own their arses into the ground. One thing those dudes dont know is the technical specifications of a computer, specifically how a CPU works in conjunction with the rest of a computer (north and south bridges and what goes on which, for example).
All they say is "oh wow, you screen is so small. My laptop has 15 inches! 3 inches more than you!" To that I always respond that they are dumb because we have the same screen resolution (1024x768) and that by having a smaller screen at the same res I reduce eye strain. They should have no cheaped out on their wintel laptop and gotten a 15 inch screen with a decent res (SXGA(1280x1024) at the least, and SXGA+(1400x1050) optimally) Gets em every time unless they dont want to listen. In that situation, I just walk away. Just goes to show that cheap machines dont always equal great, especially in the PC world, where bigger seems be to equal better from some reason.

Every now and then you get a chance to really show off your Mac. I got someone who isn't too tech-savvy but a born skeptic (had used wintel, knew wintel) to switch with this:
His Thinkpad died -- upon start-up, it would just blue-screen, nothing else. He was really upset, since he had lots of research and law school stuff on it. So I took the hard drive out, popped it into a FW enclosure, and with a Janie-Porche-would-be-proud shrug, I said, "let's see what happens" and plugged it in.
It mounted, all his stuff was there, and I burned him a back-up CD of everything he wanted.
I'm hoping oldschool's little brother can wield some influence too!😎

i think it's a natural reaction... if i went to someone's house and he had just a beta video deck, i'd be saying the same thing, "why don't you get a VHS?" (an old example, sorry, can't think of a newer equivalent.)
i think we generally believe that what's popular should be better. ("why would it be popular if it's bad?") in case of beta vs. VHS, one is not noticeably better than the other, so it's ok. however, i think PC users are really worried about preserving their popularity/quality equivalence in their mind when they see a Mac. Mac users rave about how much better it is compared to PCs... so PC users feel kind of threatened... while we Mac users keep on wondering how this world could be so messed up to the point clearly superior product can be relegated to just 5% of the market... 😀

The story behind Beta and VHS is actually kind of interesting (but in the end, I guess, not so surprising).
As I understand it, Beta is significantly better than VHS but TVs around at the time couldn't really show the difference. However, Sony Corp. held the Beta patent alone and was the only source of a license for people who wanted to sell videos on Beta. VHS was developed by a consortium of firms, so there was no way to easily associate a particular movie on VHS with a particular corporation. Why does this matter? Sony wouldn't license porn for distribution on Beta.
I'm not sure that the Mac and Windows story has anything to do with porn, but I've often wondered if there was some similar issue in the way that the PC platform became known as the "game" platform.

i've heard that the reason VHS took off and Beta did not (other than the licensing issue you mentioned) is that VHS offered longer recording time... general consumers weren't really interested in the highest video quality but how much they can record in one tape. i don't remember correctly, but it could be that Beta's max was less than 2 hours and most movies didn't fit in one tape..?

Yes, my Windows toting friend, said that he was thinking of getting a tower, I suggested G5, and he said quote: "Hell no, why would I need a computer that can do all that stuff when all I want is a computer that's good for gaming." I told him he should just get an XBox or something.

Cause, if your consider it, most games that don't come out on a console do come out on the mac (most RPGs and RTSes) as well.
Anyway, my strategy is usually to know a lot about both Windows and Macs then let everyone know that the guy who fixes your PC uses a Mac. I did have a problem with one person's PC laptop though. Her taskbar didn't appear and it took forever for her to startup. I also couldn't open Explorer so that was a problem. I suggested that she take it to HP and have it fixed under warranty (her problem was that she had both Norton and Mcafree installed). I could have fixed it, but that would require formating, and I didn't feel like reinstalling Windows (it'd been easier if it was a tower, that way I could have taken her drive, hooked it to my external FW drive kit, and backedup her data). Since it was a 2.5" drive I didn't have the tools to rescue her files. So that's why I suggested to use the warranty. Oh well, some people never learn.
