'Get a Mac' Ads: Yoga and Breakthrough
![]() ![]() Yoga featuring Judy Greer Apple has posted two new 'Get a Mac' ads featuring actors Justin Long and John Hodgman playing "Mac" and "PC", respectively. The two new ads continues with some more attacks against Microsoft's Vista operating system, but also points out why Macs might work better: Yoga - features Judy Greer as a Yoga instructor frustrated with Vista. Breakthrough - brings back the Counselor who points out that PC's issues comes from having different vendors responsible for the hardware and software, while Mac's all comes from one vendor (Apple). Apple has also continued its custom web ads, which have run on many prominent web sites. Article Link Last edited by Doctor Q : Apr 2, 2008 at 11:05 AM. |

Why do they have to keep using that obsolete stereotype?

The "Vista Sucks" campaign is getting a bit tiresome. Why not concentrate on how great OSX is instead? I think even my grandmother, is aware that Vista has not lived up to it's potential by now.

I don't think there's anything wrong with the concept as long as it's handled with a bit care. Unfortunately the last 70(?)% they've come up with haven't been particularly funny.
These kind of adds have to be funny without seeming to derogative on MS and Windows. There's a fine line between banter and bullying... |

Apple Has To Go After Microsoft....
There is a good reason why Apple tends to aim these ad's squarely at Microsoft - and that's because the people these commercials are aimed at are PC users. PC users in the market for a new computer will by default go for a new Windows machine - these ad's do a great job at raising awareness of choice in the market, and the very real pitfalls of Vista against a superior 'home user' experience with Mac.
The commercials are not aimed at me or you - who are long time / recent Apple Mac users. So it's only lame because it's not a commercial aimed at you. And why would Apple aim advertising spend at you? We are the converted - and Apple is a brand that generates huge loyalty. |

I'm still of the opinion they should move on from these ads, but I do think the 'Breakthough' ad is one of the better ones in the series - it's a real issue, it's as much a 'why macs are good' rather than just 'why PCs suck' and has at its core the idea that it's not even Microsoft's fault, surely undermining the 'MS bashing' criticism so many seem to get annoyed about with these ads.
In response to that point, you could of course list the reasons that having lots of hardware choice is actually good thing, but for ads targeted at consumers who don't know / don't have an opinion on all this stuff already, I think it's a very good idea on Apple's part. I personally think the Yoga one is quite amusing, but completely recognise that it's displaying exactly the kind of 'smugness' that annoys, and actually discourages a lot of non-mac users (and mac users too!). So one good, one bad IMHO. |

I think they're both funny. Maybe I'm easily amused.

well, i still enjoy all these commercials.
glad to see them still pumping them out. And the thing is, they are not using the ads for current Mac Owners, but to those in the PC world who are sick of Vista and everything that Microsoft is. |

I think these ads are still an effective strategy for Apple. I have a Vista box that has performed very well over the last year and I don't have many complaints about it, however, the press Vista has received over the last year has not been very good.
These ads keep Vista negativity at the front on non-tech people's minds.

I don't mind the vista bashing but this one feels too aggressive and in your face. Go subtle.

Yeah. When these ads were new a few years back, perhaps us Mac-board types might have had an opinion that mattered. But now...
Mac sales have exploded over the last few years, and they keep going up every quarter. Whenever I see someone who says they like the ads, they're generally a PC user or are new to the Mac. (Exactly the people they are trying to reach.) Clearly, it doesn't matter that the long-timers around here don't like the ads. I'm not so sure about them myself, but I'm willing to say 'screw it, go with what works.' Obviously these are doing something right. I used to debate the merit of each new ad they came out with, but at this point that doesn't seem to matter. The sales numbers speak for themselves. |

Fine line here...too much may cause a backlash...I like Apple products for what they do for me and not because they are the anti-M$ft. I think they can promote themselves without putting themselves in a position where they are attacking.
