Mac newbie - How to change colors in iCal?

I've only used my new iMac + Leopard a couple of days so please humour me.

In the iCal help menu it says you can change the calendar colours by hitting an Info button in the bottom right of the panel. There appears to be no such button on mine. How can I change my colours?

control+click on the calendar and then "get info" from their you can change the colour

or you can press cmd+I for the same window to appear.

OK, so it basically has to be one of those 4 colours?

No, it can be any color you'd like.

Right click on any calendar > Get Info > Click the color selection box > Other ...

Choose 'Other' at the bottom of the popup list and you can pick any colour you want

Don't worry I filed a bug report on it only being 4 colours, it was pretty stupid of me .

On my laptop, I tried control + click (clicking on the open iCal calendar), but all I got was a pop-up window saying "New Event." ??

And why does the Help info say there's an "Info" button at the bottom right of the calendar window when there isn't?

I have followed the direction in ical help and it is a dead end. I have tried the right clicking as mentioned in this thread, same as above, I only get "new event" option. Does anyone have an answer for this?

Here is what iCal help says:

To customize the color, choose Other, and then make your color selections in the Colors window.

You are Right clicking on the wrong place. Click on the Calendars title in the side bar. To get the "Get Info" under the Edit Menu you must have a "Subscription" Calendar selected

I keep seeing references to 6 colors - but maybe it's 6 calendars - and after
you get to 6, iCal starts repeating.

So when you click on the calendar and do the "Get info", there are only 6
color choices available (initially, pink, red, orange, green, blue and purple).
Yes, it appears you can change any of those colors, but you still only have 6.
If/when you have more than 6 calendars, iCal will choose pink as its default
for calendar 7, red for calendar 8, etc.

I have kept the default 6 (boring, I know), but when I synch to my iPod
Touch, everything is the same as it is on my iMac, which is what I want. ;^)

If you're using Snow Leopard's (10.6) iCal and loving the new exchange integration, you probably went into the Preferences and to Accounts, and then to the Delegation tab, and plus buttoned in someone else's account (i.e. who gave you reviewer, author, or editor permissions). These shared calendars show up with a set color and can't be changed (i.e. the color drop down is grayed out in the information window).

I set up the shared calendar as an actual account (in my case, got the person to sit at my computer, just to be 100% sure, as it could be on my computer and not the server), and then of course changed the color, right-clicked on the delegates version of the calendar and selected Refresh and POOF: the calendar color changed. Also note: the change occurred on other machines (but you have to wait for your refresh cycle or manually refresh to see the color change); i.e. it doesn't have to be on your machine (just have the person change it on their end) as the color coding is on the exchange 2007 or later server.

Just FYI and probably more useful for resource accounts as people will have the color preference they have and won't take a liking to you telling them what color to use; i.e. it might be easier to change your own calendar's color.

I would think you are in the same boat as Exchange; i.e. you'd need to be the owner or admin (i.e. set it up as an account, not subscription) and change the color, thus pushing down that new color to all subscribers.

You may be able to override the color if you have an older iCal, but it's more advanced (but not hard): use TextEdit, or if you have Leopard (10.5), get something like TextWrangler (or Property List Editor.app in Developer Tools, but that's one huge download) and edit your com.apple.iCal.sources.plist file (which doesn't exist in Snow Leopard (10.6) and not sure about 10.5, but it would be in ~/Library/Preferences; i.e. go to your home folder, then into your Library folder, then into your Preferences folder)--find an entry for your subscription calendar and "Color" specifically, and change that value; but, I'm just blabbering on this attempt.

You can chance a subscription just like any other calendar. Right click on the cal in the sidebar and Get Info. Select "Other" in the color drop down and choose your color.

Sorry to Pomeroy: was assuming the color drop down was grayed out (for subscriptions, like it certainly is for exchange shared calendars).

Bring up iCal on your computer (Mac), on the left top corner, select the calander you want to edit the colour of, then select the 'Edit' menu, scroll down to the 'Get info' selection. A window will pop up where you can select the colour of the selected calander. I hope this helps

Ok so what's the difference between an 'event' and a 'calendar'? I would have thought several events would happen in one calendar. I want to make different events that overlap and have each one with different colours. I see the suggestion is to make a 'new calendar'. Isn't it one calendar and that calendar is the year?? I am confused.
I just created a new calendar with title and date and when I go to that date it isn't there? Maybe I am on the wrong calendar?? Why can't you just create events, add them to your calendar and give them each a different colour- just like you would on a physical paper calendar???

I want to first note that you're replying to an old thread with a new question, which is less likely to get you a good answer than starting a new thread, just for future reference.

Your problem in your current thinking is you're misunderstanding the term calendar. It has nothing to do with the year; think about it this way, many people keep separate calendars for work, home, school, etc, but they refer to them. Some people do this by simply writing in different colors on a piece of paper with the dates printed on it (i.e. a "calendar" in the sense you've been thinking of), but they are still different calendars in their mind, because they are schedules for different purposes. Each calendar would be a set of events that are for a specific purpose, arranged however you like. In iCal, Calendars have set colors, not Events, so that Events within the same Calendar are visually grouped together. If this concept does not make sense to you and you need a different system, there may be other calendaring programs that would organize things differently, but all the ones I know follow the same convention.
